A letter to parents of prodigals

I have written this letter for you: parents who have raised your children in love yet, now, may find yourselves forgotten by them. Being disrespected by your own flesh and blood cuts deep. It is not a physical wound, but a “soul” wound – the pain of knowing that the one you would die for acts as though you never existed. It is one thing to be rejected by a stranger, but when it is your own child? It cuts to the bone! Take heart that God understands this pain as He experienced it when His own children, Adam and Eve, rejected Him.

Your children may have been poisoned by this world and fed lies that you were too hard. The truth is, they don’t understand “tough love” yet – nor your battles to feed, clothe, and educate them. The devil wants you to believe that it’s over, but keep trusting God that He can open their eyes. Despite how far your children may be, do not despair for He is near to the broken-hearted.

It takes a village to raise children not only in the ways of the Lord, but to know and love Jesus personally. You cannot do it alone as a parent, but you also cannot leave the responsibility entirely to the Church. Spiritual formation is a daily rhythm, not a Sunday activity.

Parents don’t need to fear the temptations of this world or worry that their imperfection will ruin their children. God never asked you to be perfect, He asks you to be as dependent on Him as your children are on you…

We are living in an age where everyone has something to say. Social media has made it easy for every person to have a platform. Opinions spread like wildfire, and we’ve mistaken loudness for leadership. You only need to scroll for a few minutes before you find believers arguing online about politics, church, or culture. The more divided the world becomes, the more opinionated we get. But not every opinion carries the weight of truth. Sometimes we are so quick to speak that we forget to listen.

God’s voice still speaks clearly through His Word. But we have to open it. We have to let it shape how we see the world, not the other way around…

"The breaking point was an incident with a girl. I went to see her after school because I liked her, but was humiliated by a gangster who treated me terribly in front of her and beat me up. Gangsters were the people my community valued. Growing up going from home to home, I’d always felt like a nobody. Now I was not only humiliated, but scared.
