BASIC SOUND ENGINEERING COURSE 2014
Sound Basics is a sound engineering course offered at a private facility in Somerset West. INTRODUCTION:
Multimedia in any form can be daunting as technology gets updated and is constantly changing. Learning the ‘trade’ can be just as frustrating as trying to get into it due to lack of practical skills transfer from the industry at large. Quite often, the ‘o
ld school’ knowledge is needed to create solid foundation of understanding. We have developed a number of courses based on years of practical experience within the industry. The courses are well suited to beginner and advanced learners alike due to the teaching methods used. Guest speakers from various sectors of the industry will drop in from time to time to share their knowledge and experience. Sound engineers study for years to try and master the intricacies of mixing and blending all those instruments, effects and vocal performances so that the listener can enjoy the experience of the CD, conference, church band, event, live concert etc. Some students do have a smattering of knowledge that they have picked up from experience but lack the skill to be professional and confident in the workplace. Many sound courses go into the science and mathematics using formulas and other brain wrenching stuff. Quite a few world class sound engineers still don’t understand it but get the most amazing results which tends to put them in great demand. Many graduates have also ended up doing something completely different as a result of not being able to get a foot in the door in the workplace. We recognise this so we can hopefully assist the students to network within the industry and give them an insight into the often elusive business side of the profession with the aim to empower the student with the correct knowledge and background so that he or she can be confident and professional. The Basic Sound Engineering course is modelled to teach the student the basics in layman’s terms based on over 20 years of live, film and studio sound experience. We teach using a practical ’hands-on’ approach so that the student can get real world experience in the field of sound. The first course to be run is aimed at students of 18 years of age and under and covers the essentials and a broad section of sound engineering where the student can then decide which direction in the audio field he or she wants to specialise. There will be additional add-on modules which will cover these specific fields. THE LECTURER
Aidan Harper is the CEO of MyMusicMatrix. Aidan co-wrote and produced the title track, "Going Nowhere Slowly" for the SABC3 TV series of the same name, compiled the music for 52 episodes and released a 32-track double CD set of music from the show. Aidan has 6 years experience as a sound engineer, sound mixer and boom swinger in the movie industry and travelled with the "Going Nowhere Slowly" crew for 40,000kms. Aidan worked on many local and international productions including Fear Factor, Othello, Nightlife, Heita, Bling!, Supernova, Citizen X, Gospel Gold and many commercials. Aidan specialises in rigging sound in helicopters. Aidan has been sound engineering in the music industry since 1988 and has mixed many bands in numerous venues countrywide. Aidan toured with Black Diamond as their live sound engineer and keyboard player for 4 years and travelled over 90, 000 kilometres in the process. Aidan was head of the multimedia department where he lectured sound engineering and audio production to previously disadvantaged kids as part of the Phakamani Project at the Azzad Independent Youth Services Centre. Aidan co-hosted a breakfast radio show for three years and presented the SA music, arts and culture show on community radio. He went on to present the Western Cape gig guide every week live on Radio 2000 for over two and a half years and has been a presenter on a few online radio stations. COURSE TIMES & STRUCTURE:
