A senior MDC T party official while speaking to Zimbabwe Independent said MDC T members against the party’s secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora were plotting his demise ahead of the court-sanctioned congress set for October 2020.

Speaking to the publication on condition of anonymity, the official from the women’s assembly said:

Mwnzora’s biggest problem right now is that he is hobnobbing with violent people and his rivals are plotting to expel him from the party ahead of the congress and this will greatly affect his eligibility if it happens.

The official further made claims that Khupe and Mwonzora cannot work together and said:

There are even growing calls for a neutral person to stand instead of these top people whose ambitions work against the good of the party. Khupe and Mwonzora surely can never work together. People make the mistake of assuming that when Tsvangirai died, the party split into two camps led by Chamisa and Khupe, but the real truth is that it split into three camps, the third being led by Mwonzora.

Mwonzora has always had a support base big enough to cause problems and has always harboured presidential ambitions. So, his collaboration with Khupe against Chamisa was purely driven by self-interest and it’s coming out clearly now

Khupe and Mwonzora’s collaboration against Chamisa is reportedly on the rocks as the former is being accused of being a factional leader and nominating her camp only to replace MDC Alliance legislators she recalled from parly.

A HARARE magistrate heard Thursday that MDC vice-chairperson Job sikhala was arrested last Friday by police officers while he was hiding in a ceiling at a house in Tynwald suburb.

However, the arresting officer, Collins Makore said their mission was not to arrest Sikhala, but the police had a search warrant to search for drugs, machetes and petrol bombs at the house.

This was said by Sikhala’s arresting officer, Collins Makore during the bail hearing of the opposition politician.

He is facing charges of inciting public violence and the bail application is being heard by Magistrate Lazini Ncube.

According to Makore, a team of police officers raided the Tynwald home, and while searching for the drugs, machetes, and the petrol bombs, he noticed some footprints on the wall and a missing ceiling panel in one of the rooms.

“We had a search warrant to search the house where Sikhala was after receiving information that there were machetes and petrol bombs being manufactured at the house,” he said.

“While inside, we searched and found nothing and when we were going out, we saw footprints on the wall and a panel removed from the ceiling,” he said.

Makore said the police officers convinced someone was hiding in the ceiling before they called for the person to come out, but Sikhala remained quiet.

He said Sikhala said he was coming out only after the police threatened to throw a tear gas canister.

Makore told the court he later realised it was Sikhala and they greeted each other before arresting him.

“Our mission was not to arrest him but we had to inform him that he was on the wanted persons’ list before he agreed to it and asked the police to call his lawyer.”

Opposing bail prosecutor Garudzo Ziyadhuma told the court Sikhala had tried by all means to avoid arrest before he was apprehended last Friday.

The bail application continues Friday.

youth league political commissar Godfrey Tsenengamu said it is unfortunate that the government has resorted to crushing dissenting voices and calling them terrorists and dark forces instead of engaging them and listening to their concerns.

Speaking to the Daily News on Monday from his hideout, Tsenengamu, who now leads the anti-corruption pressure group, the Front for Economic Emancipation (FEE) said inclusive dialogue is the only sustainable way. Said Tsenengamu:

It is very unfortunate that authorities have decided to descend heavily on citizens for speaking out. I thought they would engage with citizens and hear out their concerns, but sadly we are being treated like terrorists.

I think the authorities must reconsider their position on dissenting voices. That is the only sustainable way to address this.

In the same way that authorities have re-engaged and engaged with the international community and the victims of the Gukurahundi disturbances in order to find common ground, they must also consider engaging with all.

Tsenegamu’s name was put on the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP’s) wanted list after he supported calls for anti-corruption protests on 31 July which were foiled by authorities.
