AMERICA LOWERS ITS FLAGS FOR DOLLY PARTON
Some musicians receive awards when they succeed. Others receive an honour normally reserved for national leaders when they leave this world.
Following the passing of country music legend Dolly Parton at the age of 80, President Donald Trump ordered American flags to be lowered for one week in her honour.
That decision tells you Dolly was never just a singer.
She was a songwriter whose music crossed genres, borders and generations. She gave the world unforgettable songs such as “Jolene,” “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You”—a song later made globally famous by Whitney Houston.
But her greatest work may not have happened on a stage.
Through her Imagination Library, Dolly helped place free books into the hands of millions of children. She used the wealth and influence created by music to improve the lives of people who might never attend one of her concerts.
That is the difference between popularity and legacy.
Popularity makes people know your name while you are alive. Legacy makes an entire country lower its flags when you are gone.
Dolly Parton came from poverty in rural Tennessee and left this world as one of the most respected entertainers and humanitarians of her generation.
The voice has fallen silent, but the songs, books and lives she touched will continue speaking for her.
Rest in peace, Dolly Parton. The world will remember you.
