CPF Community Alert

Emergency personnel are expected to be out in full force during the coming hours in anticipation of the expected severe weather and rains. Roads and the river will be monitored!

A designated person with years of experience has been tasked with monitoring river levels as and should the storm progress will provide updates to the emergency control centre. And should there be any indication of the river breaching its banks we can expect to receive timely alerts with the all important call to evacuate coming from Disaster Management ONLY and IF it is necessary!!!!

We urge our residents to please remain vigilant and calm. Do maintain communication with neighbours and relevant Watsapp groups/SAPS or the CPF if there is anything out of the ordinary especially those on the river front properties. But please do so without creating panic.

The weather may be unpredictable but with measured reactions, communication and behaviour we can do our best to predict and mitigate the repurcussions of the expected rains.

The CPF will continue to update you as and when we receive verified information. In the meantime perhaps try ensure all your important documents and valuables are put away and ready to go IF the need arises.
Stay safe and stay in touch.

6 April 2024, 1650: LEVEL 9 WEATHER WARNING FOR HEAVY RAIN, WIND

The Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) confirmed that, after an update from the South African Weather Services, the weather warning for Monday, 8 April has been upgraded to a level 9. Level 6 warnings remain for today and tomorrow.

The Overberg will be receiving heavy rain over the next few days and gale force winds with strong wave action are also forecasted.

The severity of this storm demands caution, attention, and proactive measures.

The disaster management teams are on standby and will be able to assist in cases of flooding and emergencies.

Here's a reminder of the 24/7 contact numbers you might need for the various emergency services:

028 312 2400 in case of a Fire or Flood
028 313 8111 for municipal services emergencies relating to burst water pipes etc
082 990 5967 NSRI Hermanus
063 699 2765 NSRI Kleinmond

According to the Disaster Management Centre, there are several actions residents must consider during this storm:
โ€ข Stay Informed: Keep yourself updated with the latest weather reports through trusted local news platforms, radio alerts, and your local municipalityโ€™s social media pages. Follow instructions from authorities and be prepared to act accordingly.
โ€ข Secure Your Property: Take necessary precautions to protect your property and belongings. If still able and is safe, clear any debris or potential flying objects from your yard, secure loose items, and reinforce doors and windows.
โ€ข Evacuation Plans: If you live in an area prone to flooding or other hazards, get to a higher lying area,
โ€ข Stay Indoors and Take Shelter: During the storm, it is crucial to stay indoors and stay in a safe area of your home. Avoid windows and do not venture outside until authorities announce it is safe to do so.
โ€ข Power Outages: Be aware that power outages are possible during severe storms. Ensure you charge your devices while possible to ensure that you have a platform to stay informed.
โ€ข Avoid Flooded Areas: Do not attempt to cross flooded roads or walk or drive through standing water. Flooding can be deceptive and pose serious risks. Stay away from rivers, streams, and low-lying areas that are prone to flooding.
โ€ข Stay Connected: Keep in touch with your loved ones, friends, and neighbours, especially those who may require assistance. Check on vulnerable or elderly individuals to ensure their safety and well-being

HERMANUS HARBOUR SET TO WELCOME CRUISE LINER

On Saturday, 30 March 2024, Hermanus Harbour will greet the Silver Cloud and her 254 passengers.

This small cruise ship, operated by SilverSea, was the fleetโ€™s first ship to take service in 1994. Since her maiden cruise there has been extensive upgrades, including the reconfiguration of an observation lounge.

The ship primarily sails on expedition cruises which include the polar regions. The Silver Cloud stands out as one of the highest crew to guest ratio cruise liners with 20 inflatable boats (zodiacs) and 10 kayaks on board.

Between 26 March and 15 April 2024, the Silver Cloud will call on Hermanus and seven other South African ports. After stopping in Cape Town, the ship will arrive in Hermanus and anchor offshore to bring passengers to Hermanus Harbour with the onboard zodiacs. Anchoring is weather dependent.

Overstrand Municipality Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, stated that Silver Cloudโ€™s arrival has been much anticipated with months of planning.

โ€œThe economic spin-off for the local economy is good news and this arrival will provide the experience to benefit future visits. There have already been enquiries from other cruise liners about visiting the Overstrand with its quality and variety of tourism products that international travellers favour. Our natural beauty is renowned, and the cruise liner visitors are eager for new experiences.โ€

She said a number of itineraries have been designed for the passengers who will be onshore from about 8:00 till 17:00 on the day. โ€œExploration is not limited to Hermanus only and includes attractions in neighbouring villages. Going forward these options will be extended to ensure experiences comprise the whole of the Overstrand.โ€

โ€œWe need to make the most of this new opportunity afforded by cruise liner visits to create more jobs and support business growth,โ€ Mayor Rabie added.
