“My 13 year old daughter has been recently taking cucumbers out of the refrigerator and into her bedroom, and then returning them to the fridge later on, and the oddest thing is that they are all wrinkled and squished after they are returned. I asked her once what she was doing and she said that she was going to eat it and then decided she didn't want it anymore and when I asked why it was squished she said she didn't know. The next day I made my famous cucumber salad and my husband said it tasted different this time, personally I thought it tasted like chemicals or lotion or something but I didn’t think my daughter did anything more then maybe squeezing it har…. I’m not sure whats going on but has this ever happened to anyone else? I don’t know how to address this any further but I may start keeping the cucumbers in my car since its cold out”. 😵‍💫 Help

The Democratic Republic of Congo's President Félix Tshisekedi and his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame have called for an "immediate ceasefire" in eastern DR Congo, after having direct talks in Qatar.
It is the first time two leaders have met since Rwanda-backed M23 rebels stepped up an offensive in the region, where authorities say 7,000 people have been killed since January.
It is unclear whether the M23 would heed the ceasefire call, after the rebels refused to attend peace talks in Angola on Tuesday.
DR Congo accuses Rwanda of arming the M23 and sending troops to support the rebels in the conflict. Despite assertions from both the UN and US, Rwanda has denied supporting the M23.

Rwanda has said its forces are acting in self-defence against the DR Congo army and allied militias. DR Congo also accuses Rwanda of illegally exploiting its mineral deposits in the east of the country, which Rwanda also denies.
What's the fighting in DR Congo all about?
The evidence that shows Rwanda is backing rebels in DR Congo
Last December, peace talks brokered by Angola collapsed after Rwanda demanded that the DR Congo government talk directly to the M23.
The rebel group then advanced swiftly, taking control of two key cities - Goma and Bukavu - in the past two months.
According to a joint statement released by Qatar's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday, the two African presidents reaffirmed their commitment to an "immediate and unconditional" ceasefire, but it was not clear how that would be implemented or monitored.
"The heads of state then agreed on the need to continue the discussions initiated in Doha in order to establish solid foundations for lasting peace," it added.
The meeting took many by surprise as the two leaders have appeared uncompromising on the conflict often exchanging barbs in public.
While confirming the talks in the Qatari capital, the Rwandan presidency insisted in a separate statement that direct talks between DR Congo and M23 were "key to addressing the root causes of the conflict".
President Kagame expressed his belief that with "all parties working together, things can move forward faster".
DR Congo presidential spokeswoman Tina Salama said on X that the talks were initiated by the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, describing the Gulf nation as a "strategic ally of the two [African] countries".
In a presidential statement, the Congolese government said the meeting marked the first step towards a basis for a lasting peace in the volatile east, hinting at further talks.
The meeting of the two leaders came as a previous attempt to bring DR Congo's government and M23 rebels together for peace talks failed. The rebels pulled out on Monday after the European Union announced sanctions on their leadership

Close to 70,000 South Africans have expressed interest in moving to the US following Washington's offer to resettle people from the country's Afrikaner community, a business group has said.
The South African Chamber of Commerce in the USA (Saccusa) said its website received tens of thousands of registrations from those seeking more information.
In a February executive order, President Donald Trump said Afrikaners - descendants of mainly Dutch settlers who arrived in the 17th Century - could be admitted as refugees as they were "victims of unjust racial discrimination".
Relations between the US and South Africa have become increasingly strained since Trump became president in January.

3 minutes
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has criticised the budget allocation for health saying it made no provision to pay off more than R4 billion owed to suppliers and fill staff vacancies.

The Gauteng Health budget increased by 3,7% from R64,7 billion to R67 billion.

DA Gauteng Health Spokesperson, Jack Bloom, says there is no extra money to fix crumbling hospitals.

He says the other challenge is the funding gap resulting from the withdrawal of US Pepfar fund.

“Premier Panyaza Lesufi should give priority to the health budget. He seems to ignore the need for radical change and top management, because this is the department that most misspends the available budget and has very poor outcomes for hospital patients who stand in long queues and wait a very long time for operations,” says Bloom.

Education

Finance and Economic Development MEC Lebogang Maile says they have allocated R69 billion to education. He says the funds will go towards expanding access to quality basic education and early childhood development.

He says the allocated budget will increase to more than R200 billion in the next three years.

“In the 2025/2026 financial year, the Gauteng Department of Education receives R69,6 billion, and cumulatively R211,2 billion over the MTEF, to expand access to quality basic education and Early Childhood Development (ECD) and improve education outcomes for women, girls, youth, and persons with disabilities,” says Maile.

Israeli strikes killed at least 20 Palestinians in Gaza on Wednesday, local health workers said, as the Israeli military unleashed more bombardments of the enclave and ordered residents to evacuate combat zones.

The United Nations said a foreign staffer was killed and five other workers were wounded in an Israeli airstrike on the site of a UN headquarters in central Gaza City.

Jorge Moreira da Silva, Executive Director of the UN office for Project Services, said: “Israel knew that this was a U.N. premises, that people were living, staying and working there, it is a compound. It is a very well-known place.

An explosive device was dropped or fired on the premises, he told a press conference in Brussels.

“This was not an accident,” he said. “What’s happening in Gaza is unconscionable.”

The Israeli military denied it had struck the UN compound in Deir al-Balah. It said it had hit a Hamas site in northern Gaza where it had detected preparations for firing into Israeli territory.

The renewed bloodshed followed one of the deadliest days so far in the Israeli assault on the Palestinian territory, with

Israeli airstrikes killing more than 400 people on Tuesday, according to Palestinian health authorities.

The fighting ended weeks of relative calm since a ceasefire in January largely paused the war between Israeli forces and Hamas and other militants. Israel said the onslaught was “just the beginning”.

Israel and Hamas accuse each other of breaching the truce, which had offered a respite for Gaza’s 2.3 million residents after 17 months of war that has reduced the enclave to rubble and forced most of its population to evacuate multiple times.

The Israeli campaign has killed more than 49 000 people in Gaza, Palestinian health authorities say, and caused a humanitarian crisis with shortages of food, fuel and water.

Israel has accused Hamas of using Palestinian civilians as human shields. Hamas denies this and accuses Israel of indiscriminate bombings.

The war – the most devastating episode in decades of Israel- Palestinian conflict – was triggered by a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, in which gunmen killed some 1 200 people and took about 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.

Israel has vowed to wipe out the Islamist group, which ruled over Gaza before the war and still holds sway.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to resume bombardments has triggered protests in Israel as 59 hostages are still being held in Gaza, with 24 of them believed to be still alive.

A coalition of hostage families and protesters against Netanyahu’s moves against the judiciary and other parts of the security establishment has regrouped and accuses the prime minister of using the war for political ends.

On Wednesday, the Israeli army dropped leaflets in the northern and southern Gaza Strip, ordering residents to evacuate their homes, warning they were in “dangerous combat zones”.

“Staying in the shelters or the current tent puts your lives and that of your family members in danger, evacuate immediately,” read a leaflet dropped on Beit Hanoun.

Netanyahu said on Tuesday he had ordered strikes because Hamas had rejected proposals to secure an extension of the ceasefire until April.

Hamas accused Israel of jeopardising efforts by mediators to negotiate a permanent deal to end the fighting.

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Wednesday she told Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar that the situation in Gaza is “unacceptable”.

Jordan’s King Abdullah called for the ceasefire to be restored and for aid flows to resume.

“Israel’s resumption of attacks on Gaza is an extremely dangerous step that adds further devastation to an already dire humanitarian situation,” he said on a visit to Paris for talks with French President Emmanuel Macron.

ARAB PLAN IN JEOPARDY

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Wednesday called for restraint from all sides ahead of her trip to Lebanon to discuss the conflict.

“The resumption of fighting … jeopardises the positive efforts of the Arab states, which together want to pursue a peaceful path for Gaza, free from Hamas,” Baerbock said in a statement.

Israel and Western powers do not want Hamas to play any role in the enclave when the war is over.

Arab nations drew up a plan for peace and reconstruction in Gaza after a proposal from U.S. President Donald Trump to resettle Palestinians and turn it into the “Riviera” of the Middle East triggered outrage in the region. However, the plan has not gained traction.

In Wednesday’s violence, three people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a house in Gaza City, while another airstrike left two men dead and wounded six others in Beit Hanoun town in the north, the Gaza health officials said.

Palestinian medics said Israeli tank shelling on the Salahdeen road killed one Palestinian and wounded others, while an Israeli airstrike killed three people in a house in Beit Lahiya town north of the enclave.
