On sunny days like these, my mind always goes straight to my Chapters range. These wines are a collection of terroir-driven, single-varietal expressions – each one representing a vineyard site that caught my attention somewhere along the way.

Over the years, I’ve discovered small, special parcels of vines with the potential to produce wines of remarkable quality. I’ve always had a soft spot for older vines on poorer soils – they tend to give the purest expression of site.

These are the kinds of wines I love to drink when the sun is out and the surf is good, and I hope you’ll enjoy them as much as I do.

The Cape Winemakers Guild Auction is now live. Bidding is open online through . You’ll find the direct link to my auction wines in my bio.

This year, I am offering two vintages of Maximilian - 2018 and 2019. The greatest reflection of my work from those vintages.

It is always an immense privilege to present my wines alongside those of my peers at the auction. Thank you for the support - I hope you enjoy.

The Max 2022 receives 98 points, with Sam 2022 also earning an exciting 96 in the latest report 🍷

I’m proud to share these high scores, along with the ratings for all of the wines I’ve been working on. Numbers are just one way of measuring what we try to do in the vineyard and cellar but it’s always great to see them recognised.

Max 2022 (Stellenbosch) – 98
Sam 2022 (Stellenbosch) – 96
Chapters Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 (Stellenbosch) – 93
Chapters Cinsault 2024 (Swartland) – 93
Chapters OVP Chenin Blanc 2024 (Stellenbosch) – 93
Chapters OVP Sauvignon Blanc 2024 (Stellenbosch) – 93
The Introduction Chenin Blanc 2024 (Coastal) – 90
The Introduction Red 2023 (Stellenbosch) – 91
Tony’s Vintage Reserve 2021 (Swartland) – 93

I’ve always believed that good wine starts in the vineyard and that attention to detail in every step makes a difference. These wines reflect the sites, the struggles and the work we put in and it’s rewarding to see that showing through.

Cheers for the scores - both the Max and Sam will be poured at the Tim Atkin ‘95+ point tasting’ event in Stellenbosch tonight and in Johannesburg on the 4th. If you’re attending, please drop by!

Chuffed to be in the running for Winemaker of the Year in Tim Atkin MW’s South Africa Special Report. Thank you for building up the suspense this year 😂🤙🏽

Probably one of the most prestigious publications in our wine industry so it’s always a privilege to be mentioned alongside so many talented friends and colleagues.

Looking forward to the results on September 2nd🍷

Hard to believe it’s already been over a week since I poured alongside Saskia and her friend Kasha at Under the Atrium.

An epic event with some seriously memorable wines. Grateful for the chance to connect with so many of you and to taste a few gems myself.

When’s the next one? 🍷

Decanter Cellar: 20 of the Best Cabernet Sauvignons🍷

It’s an honour to find out that the Sam 2021 has been named among the best Cabernets in the world by Decanter, with 97 points. Thank you to for recognising what this wine means to me.

Described as “supremely elegant yet not without fruit power and vinous density”, the Sam is my flagship and a wine I’m always excited to make.

Quantities are limited and available on request only. If you’d like to experience one of the world’s best Cabernets 😉 please drop me an email through the website.

The cellar’s always a bit of a sight during harvest - it can look like complete chaos. There’s grapes everywhere, sticky floors, pumps running, bins stacked, people moving in all directions. The smells are wild due to fermenting juice, skins breaking down, with a bit of reductiveness here and there and there’s this constant background noise of things happening.

Then it all dies down. But even outside of harvest it’s never really that quiet in the cellar because there’s always something going on. We’ve got racking, topping, tasting, cleaning (and cleaning and cleaning)… you never really do the same thing two days in a row just like no two vintages are the same. You can try as much as you want to start to recognising patterns, but you’re always adapting. Some years everything goes to plan, others you get thrown a few curveballs and you have to think on your feet.

That’s part of winemaking. You keep learning, you keep making wine, and you do what needs to be done so there’s a bottle at the end of it that you actually enjoy drinking.

If you find yourself in Stellenbosch looking for the Max then you’ll find it at . A quaint little wine bar at the upper end of Church street with some pretty good pizza - something the Max pairs incredibly well with.

Two of my wines were recently included in a 10-year retrospective tasting in London. Saskia secured second place in the Cape White Blend category with a score of 92.33 - described as “characterful and distinctive,” with “a good deal of power behind the fruit, lending it a pithy, quite taut finish.”

Max was entered in the Bordeaux blends and single varietal category, earning a final score of 91.43 with “good purity of dark fruits” and being “composed and quite stylish.”

It’s a real pleasure to see how the wines are holding a decade on.
