Literature has always been close to my heart and Prof. Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o was one of those writers who truly fascinated me. I met him about ten years ago, for just a brief moment, but I still remember how calm he was. He had such a strong, quiet presence. Everyone was patiently waiting for their chance to say hello.

Hearing about his passing was sad, yet it also felt like the right moment to celebrate his life and everything his writing stood for, especially how deeply it shaped political thought in Kenya and beyond.

Rift Valley Institute hosted an amazing afternoon in his honour, bringing together recognized writers and linguists who had crossed paths with Ngũgĩ over the years, like Prof. Kimani Njogu and Hon. Yusuf Hassan. Whether through university projects or professional work, they shared powerful memories that helped us reflect on Ngũgĩ’s influence not just as a writer but as a fearless political voice.

His words lit fires, challenged systems and inspired generations. What a legacy!

Did you know that only 16% of Africa’s trade happens within the continent? It’s surprising we still trade more with the rest of the world than with our own neighbours.

That really stood out to me during the Fintech Festival Tanzania 2025 where one of the most insightful discussions was on cross-border payments and how fintech can drive intra-African trade.

Just imagine this: a Tanzanian SME buying goods from an Ethiopian supplier, paying in Tanzanian Shillings through a digital wallet and the seller receiving Ethiopian Birr. This multi-currency infrastructure is what we need across the continent.

Fintech is at the heart of Africa’s growth story – mobile wallets, APIs and blockchain, all opening doors for trade, innovation, and entrepreneurship. For this to happen, fintechs need to collaborate with banks, governments, SMEs and everyday users to create secure, simple and inclusive platforms.

To truly thrive, we need to build this future together. A future where Africans trade with Africans, powered by fintech and built on trust.

Are you sharing your story? During the Africa Fintech Summit which was held in Nairobi, Kenya last week, there were several key discoveries. One that stood out for me as a Communications and Marketing Practitioner, is the power of a really good product and an exceptional story.

One of the well-known tech company founders, shared that as an entrepreneur, he always has it at the back of his mind that his product needs to be remarkable and constantly evolve. This not only makes it easier to sell, but also attracts investors and partners, who would love to be associated with the brand.

Then you tell your story. Telling your story breathes life into your work. You connect with your audience and build authenticity. It helps your product or service stand out, giving you the tools to build a strong ecosystem. Stories inspire, educate, and humanise, making them one of the most compelling ways to communicate ideas and impact.
