These European Rollers were EVERYWHERE in Kruger and were such little posers! Often they would follow the car for a couple hundred meters, landing on the tips of bushes along the road, making for many perfect, close-up photo opportunities 🐦

Everyone loves a good wallow and play-fight in the pool on a beautiful, hot summer’s day ☀️ 🏖 Wishing it was summer…

We spotted this herd of Elephant grazing on the river banks, wallowing in the cool water and play-flighting with each other on a hot day in the Kruger. As far as I can remember, these pictures were taken on the banks of the Crocodile River, close to the Malelane Gate.

This was my first ever Painted Dog (AKA Wild Dog) sighting, and needless to say, I was in awe of their beauty 😍 We were just busy driving along the H4-2 on our way from Lower Sabie to Berg en Dal and out of nowhere we saw a flash of colour on our left hand side in the bush. We immediately stopped and started reversing to see what it was, when suddenly this lone Painted Dog leaped out of the thick undergrowth. A couple seconds later about five other Painted Dogs also emerged from the bush.

It was just incredible how many close-up encounters we got with these giants while we were in Kruger! We really loved sitting and spending time around these large majestic, peaceful and powerful animals and just enjoying their silent company.

I visited the Karoo National Park in July of 2021 while driving down from Limpopo to Cape Town. Join me as I explore this unique park in 24 hours.

“The Karoo National Park, founded in 1979, is a wildlife reserve in the Great Karoo area of the Western Cape, South Africa near Beaufort West. This semi-desert area covers an area of 750 square kilometres. The Nuweveld portion of the Great Escarpment runs through the Park. It is therefore partly in the Lower Karoo, at about 850 m above sea level, and partly in the Upper Karoo at over 1300 m altitude.

The Karoo National Park is a sanctuary for herds of springbok, gemsbok (or Oryx), Cape mountain zebra, red hartebeest, black rhinoceros, eland, kudu, klipspringer, bat-eared foxes, black-backed jackal, ostriches, and, since fairly recently, lions. It also has the greatest number of tortoise species of any park in the world - five in total.”

I could unfortunately not get a great picture of these two Bateleurs but thought they were too magnificent to not share. It’s crazy to think that their wingspans can reach up to 1,90 meters!

Can you name this bird? It is absolutely incredible how many different species of bird can be found in Kruger in the summer months! We started our trip counting and marking down the different bird species that we spotted, but after just a couple days it became too much a we just couldn’t keep up. Needles to say, birding in Kruger in December is fantastic!

The bushveld chicken (AKA the Swainson’s Spurfowl) performing his favourite activity: waking me up at 5am.

Although very common in Kruger, these birds were definitely not taken for granted, as I strongly associate their district screeching “kreeeeet-kreeeeet-kreeeet” call at dawn and dusk with the bushveld.
