Camp Report: Afrikology Institute Girls to Women Camp
"Step into Your Power" 2025

From August 29th to 31st, I had the privilege of attending the "Step into Your Power" camp, a dynamic and empowering experience designed for young girls.

The camp was a wonderful opportunity to connect with others, learn new skills, and gain valuable insights.

*Highlights:*

- *Leadership and Teamwork*: As one of the leaders, I had the chance to work with fellow campers from different communities across Durban developing essential teamwork and leadership skills. This experience taught me the importance of collaboration and effective communication.
- *Important Life Lessons*: We had enlightening sessions on human trafficking, led by the Amazimtoti police, which highlighted the importance of awareness and safety. We also learned about the potential risks associated with social media and how to navigate these platforms responsibly.

- *Cultural Enrichment*: Our sessions with Sis Hlengiwe from Durban Tourism introduced us to the world of tourism, while another session on farming showed us the value of agriculture and sustainability. These experiences broadened my understanding of different career paths and interests.

- *Language and Spirituality*: Sis Fezokuhle's engaging Zulu classes emphasized the significance of embracing our cultural heritage and languages.
- Mama Nhlanhla Mkize workshop on seeds and the land also made us aware of the importance of seed and the respect we must have for planting. This session made most girls put their hands up to become farmers.
- Gogo's sessions on spirituality , getting us to sit on the ground in a circle encouraged us to connect with our inner selves and appreciate our that our roots are important.

*Bonding Moments:*

- The camp's communal sleeping arrangements allowed us to share camp stories, play games, and bond over shared experiences.
- We enjoyed dancing, singing, and delicious meals together, including plenty of fish!
- Bathing together might have been unconventional, but it added to the camp's fun and relaxed atmosphere.

*Takeaways:*

- The camp significantly boosted my confidence and motivated me to take on new challenges.
- I realized the importance of embracing my mixed Zulu and Xhosa heritage and plan to learn more about both cultures.
- I'm inspired to learn additional African languages, such as Swahili, to further connect with my roots.

*Overall*, the "Step into Your Power" camp was an unforgettable experience that provided a perfect blend of fun, learning, and personal growth. I'm grateful for the opportunity to attend and look forward to applying the lessons learned in my daily life.

Acknowledge

I would like to say thank you to the Mothers who took time to be with us girls throughout the Camp.

Most of all to the Afrikology Institute for the concept of a Cultural Heritage Center just for the children and the Youth. We wish government and others could really support Mama Yaa Nobantu Ngidi and her team,so we can have more of these.

I thank you.
