Motorists should brace for a possible major fuel price increase in April warms AA

The Automobile Association (AA) has warned motorists to brace for the biggest fuel price increase in April last seen before the impact of the Coronavirus.

Commenting in a statement on unaudited data released by the Central Energy Fund, the AA said stronger international oil prices combined with a weaker Rand points to 90 cents a litre increase in the price of petrol, 66 cents for diesel and 62 cents for illuminating.

In a further blow, the association stated that the amounts don’t include the 26 cents rise in the general fuel price and road accident levies announced by Finance Minister Tito Mboweni in his mid-term budget speech last month.

With these included, the price of petrol is set to increase by a whopping R1.16 a litre and diesel by 92 cents. It therefore means that a litre of fuel at the reef will cost R17.48 a litre and diesel R15.04 with R6.10 and R5.96 of the respective amounts being as result of the mentioned taxes

⛽⛽ ↘️〽️
Motorists will see another massive petrol price cut in May, thanks to sharp declines in the price of crude oil.

All grades of petrol will fall by R1.74 per litre from Wednesday, 6 May, while diesel will fall by between R1.56 and R1.61 per litre.

Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mantashe, said that the rand depreciated, on average, against the dollar during the period under review.

This led to higher contributions to the basic fuel prices of petrol, diesel, and illuminating paraffin, by 33.57 c/l, 41.94 c/l, and 29.98 cl respectively.

The average brent crude oil price, meanwhile, decreased markedly – from $35.25 to $20.00 per barrel for the period under review.

“The main reason for the lower oil prices is due to the continuous spread of the Covid-19 and the resultant lockdown of the major economies globally.

“This is despite the fact that OPEC and Russia agreed to reduce oil production by about 10 million barrels per day during their April meeting,” Mantashe said.

The prices will be adjusted as follows:

95 Petrol: decrease of R1.74 per litre
93 Petrol: decrease of R1.74 per litre
0.05% diesel: decrease of R1.61 per litre
0.005% diesel: decrease of R1.56 per litre
Illuminating Paraffin: decrease of R2.23 per litre
This how the latest data reflects in the current prices:

Fuel (Inland) April Official May official
95 Petrol R13.96 R12.22
93 Petrol R13.76 R12.02
0.05% Diesel (wholesale) R12.69 R11.08
0.005% Diesel (wholesale) R12.73 R11.17
Illuminating Paraffin R6.72 R4.49

⛽Good News⛽

The average rand/US dollar exchange rate for the period ended January 2020 to 27 February 2020 was R14.98 compared to R14.33 during the previous period.

This led to a higher contribution to the basic fuel prices on petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin by 29.13 c/1, 29.73 c/I and 29.00 c/I.

The changes are as follows:

Both Grades of petrol 93 and 95 (ULP & LRP) down 19 cents per litre
Both Grades of diesel 0.05% and 0.005% Sulphur down 54 cents per litre
Illuminating Paraffin (Wholesale) down 68.00 cents per litre

Oil & Gas Statistics At present, South Africa does not have significant proven oil and gas reserves and produces oil and gas from coal and imported crude oil. The relative under-utilisation of gas is as a result of the abundant coal resources in the country that allowed South Africa to produce petro...

TIPS ON FILLING YOUR CAR(S) (Good information)

Petrol is becoming more and more expensive!

My line of work has been in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every litre. Here at the Marian Hill Pipeline where I work in Durban we deliver about 4 million litres in a 24-hour period through the pipeline. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and petrol, LRP and Unleaded. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 litres.

Only buy or fill up your car or bakkie in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground.. The colder the ground the more dense the fuel, when it gets warmer petrol expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening your litre is not exactly a litre. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the petrol, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role.

A one degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapours that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapour return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapour. Those vapours are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your tank is HALF FULL.

The reason for this is because the more fuel you have in your tank the less air is occupying its empty space. Petrol evaporates faster than you can imagine. Petroleum storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the petrol and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every litre is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a fuel truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy, DO NOT fill up - most likely the petrol/diesel is being stirred up as the fuel is being delivered and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom. Hope this will help you get the most value for your money.
