Cyber-fraudsters are swooping into SA property deals with slick AI deep-fakes & “urgent payment” emails that look oh-so-real.

Legal firm Wright Rose-Innes warns that criminals now intercept emails, clone voices & create AI deep-fake videos to trick buyers & sellers into paying deposits into fake accounts. Their favourite tricks:

1. “Urgent payment needed to ‘finalise’ your transfer”
2. A last-minute “bank-detail change” email
3. Impersonating agents or conveyancers via hacked or spoofed addresses

Guardrails that work:
• Always phone your conveyancer or agent on a known number to verify any account details.
• Ask your bank to confirm beneficiary banking details before hitting “send.”
• Use strong email passwords, 2-factor authentication, and reliable antivirus to keep hackers out.

South Africa is already a global cyber-crime hotspot, with losses in the billions. Property transactions are now firmly in the crosshairs. Double-checking could save you millions & months of heartache.
