Rastafari Women Launch Bake Sale to Fight Gender-Based Violence in the Movement

The Rastafari Women Empowerment Foundation (RWEF) will host a community bake sale in Katlehong this Sunday , 30 November, in a bold effort to raise funds and awareness around gender-based violence (GBV) within the Rastafari movement.

The Initiative was sparked by widespread shock and outrage after a 10-year-old girl was allegedly graped by a Rasta priest — a case that shook the Rastafari community and dominated conversations across social platforms and gatherings. In response, RWEF decided to take action, using the bake sale as both a fundraising event and a platform to break the silence around abuse that too often goes unaddressed.

A powerful line-up of speakers and performers will anchor the event. Among them is Seipei Moate aka Lady Rosita of Kgatleng FM, a well-known radio personality who has worked closely with TURF on multiple interviews and GBV awareness features. Lady Rosita is currently entangled in her own legal battle — fighting not only against her child’s grapist, but also against the grapist’s mother, who has allegedly attempted to obstruct justice.

Her presence Is expected to be one of the day’s most important highlights. She will speak about her ongoing fight for justice, the emotional and financial toll of the court process, and the urgent need for communal support for survivors and their families.

In addition to the talks, the bake sale will feature live performances by Sankie Fayauman, Dimahr, and King D, with a special DJ set by Mama Zion Lioness, Empress Supreme and Basadi in music awards winner Mada Glory, promising a vibrant atmosphere that merges activism with artistry.

RWEF has encouraged community members, businesses, and supporters to donate cakes, cupcakes, pastries, or any baked goods to help increase fundraising efforts. All proceeds will go toward legal assistance, survivor support programmes, and ongoing GBV awareness campaigns within the Rastafari community.

The bake sale is open to the public, and all are welcome to participate, donate, or simply show support through presence and solidarity.

The event will take place at Naledi Pre-Primary School 603 Moseu Street Tsolo Section Katlehong

JIMMY CLIFF, GLOBAL REGGAE ICON, PASSES AWAY AT 81

The world is mourning the loss of one of reggae’s most influential pioneers, Jimmy Cliff, who passed away on 24 November 2025 at the age of 81. The Jamaican-born singer, songwriter and actor—celebrated for timeless classics such as “Many Rivers to Cross,” “The Harder They Come,” and “You Can Get It If You Really Want”—leaves behind a towering legacy that forever reshaped global music culture.

Cliff, born on 30 June 1944, was one of the few artists whose impact transcended generations, genres, and continents. His voice became synonymous with hope, resilience and the spiritual depth of reggae music. Over a career spanning six decades, he helped carry Jamaican music onto the world stage, inspiring millions of fans and countless artists.

His family released an emotional statement confirming that the legendary musician passed away after suffering a seizure followed by pneumonia. His wife, Latifa, speaking on behalf of the family, expressed profound grief while thanking fans and the global music community for their unwavering support throughout Cliff’s journey.

“It's with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia… To all his fans around the world, please know that your support was his strength throughout his whole career… Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes… I hope you all can respect our privacy during these hard times,” the statement read.

Cliff is survived by his wife Latifa and children Lilty and Aken, who described him as not only a global icon but a loving husband and father. They also extended gratitude to Dr. Couceyro and attending medical staff for their support during his final days.

Across the reggae fraternity, tributes continue to pour in. From Kingston to Johannesburg, Amsterdam to London, fans and musicians are celebrating Cliff’s influence, his artistry and the indelible mark he left on the world. Social media has been flooded with messages honouring the legend, with many echoing the sentiment: “Rastas never die.”

Jimmy Cliff’s contributions earned him global acclaim, including induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, numerous awards, and recognition from governments and institutions worldwide. Yet, for many, his greatest achievement was the spiritual and social power of his music—songs that spoke to struggle, liberation, love and perseverance.

Memorial arrangements and further announcements will be shared by the family in due course.

As the world bids farewell, the reggae community stands united in honouring a man whose voice will echo for generations.
Rest in power, Jimmy Cliff—legend, pioneer, and eternal flame of reggae music.

GUMBA FYAH IGNITES MOSES BUSH AFTER POSTPONEMENT

After being forced to postpone on the 16th of November due to last week’s heavy rains, the highly anticipated Gumba Fyah finally blazed to life on Friday, 21 November — and the wait proved more than worth it. Originally scheduled for Lebo’s Backpackers in Soweto, the event found an unexpected but powerful new home at Moses Bush, the former Bassline venue, which transformed into a spiritual arena of dub, roots reggae, and Rastafari unity.

By early evening, the atmosphere at Moses Bush was already electric. Steppers flocked in full force, filling the space with movement, rhythm, and an unmistakable sense of energy. Two local powerhouses — Big Bad Sound System and Giggs Pro Sound — rolled out their massive rigs in full support, shaking the walls and the ground with deep, meditative basslines.

International presence elevated the celebration even further. The legendary King Shiloh from Amsterdam made his return to South Africa’s dub community, delivering a performance that had the crowd roaring with joy. Also gracing the stage was Rapha Pico, whose set added another rich layer to the night’s global reggae exchange. With visitors from neighbouring countries also in attendance, the event felt like a meeting point of cultures, united by sound.

Despite the sudden venue change, the turn-out was overwhelming. Moses Bush was packed to capacity, yet the atmosphere remained warm, communal, and spiritually charged. Fans described the night as more than just a party — it was a rejuvenating experience rooted in the consciousness and vibration of reggae and dub music.

The aroma of freshly prepared Ital and vegan food drifted through the venue, becoming part of the sensory tapestry that defined the evening. People ate, danced, reasoned, and connected — embodying the true ethos of Rastafari culture.

The successful staging of Gumba Fyah was made possible through the unwavering efforts of organiser Malatsi Solly of United Colors of Reggae, whose dedication kept the vision alive despite weather setbacks and logistical challenges. What was meant to be a disruption ultimately became a blessing, turning the event into one of the most memorable gatherings of the year.

With sound systems shaking the earth, artists lifting the spirit, and the people moving as one, Gumba Fyah once again proved its place as a cornerstone of Johannesburg’s reggae and dub community — a celebration of music, culture, and higher vibration
