Over 100 Gauteng pupils were rushed to hospital on Wednesday after falling ill from a suspected foodborne illness.

Gauteng education spokesperson Steve Mabona said allegations were that the pupils began vomiting and experiencing stomach cramps after eating samp at school during break time.

All the 110 learners are from Tamaho Primary School in Katlehong on the East Rand.

"Emergency services responded swiftly, and all affected learners were transported to various clinics and hospitals for immediate medical attention.

"All 110 learners were hospitalised following the incident, with 98 learners subsequently discharged after receiving medical treatment.

"Twelve learners remain in the hospital under medical supervision as healthcare providers continue to monitor their condition," Mabona said.

Emergency services responded swiftly, and all affected learners were transported to various clinics and hospitals for immediate medical attention.

MEC for education Matome Chiloane has expressed "grave concern over the recurrence of such incidents at Gauteng schools".

“It is alarming to witness such cases of foodborne illness affecting our learners. The safety and wellbeing of our learners is our highest priority, and we are committed to working closely with health authorities to understand and address the root causes of these incidents. We wish all recovering learners a speedy return to good health,” said Chiloane.

Mabona said the Gauteng department of education in partnership with the Gauteng department of health were actively monitoring the situation and will provide additional information as the investigation proceeds.

16 CHILDREN FALL SICK AFTER CONSUMING "ATCHAR" IN TEMBISA

Six of the affected children remain in hospital after consuming atchar that was sold to them by two grade 7 learners at the school.The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) was alerted to an incident involving an alleged foodborne illness that broke out earlier today 23RDOctober at Emmangweni Primary School in Tembisa affecting 16 learners

Reports indicate that, after the school Lunch at 11:00am a group of 16 learners aged between 11 and 15 reported to the office for experiencing syptomps of dizziness including vomiting from a suspected foodborne illness.During preliminary investigations, it was discovered that the learners had consumed atchar, which they bought from other learners.

Two Grade 7 learners from the school reportedly admitted to selling the atchar on behalf of a woman who is a Community Work Programme (CWP)member.Emergency services responded swiftly and transported all 16 affected learners to medical facilities.

Parents were promptly informed about the situation and accompanied their children to the respective medical facilities.We can confirm that 10 learners have since been stabilised and discharged.Only three learners remain at Tembisa Hospital and another three at Esangweni Clinic, where they are receiving necessary medical attention, and their condition is being monitored,” said GDE MEC Matome Chiloane.

Investigations into this incident are underway.The safety of all learners remains a top priority as the department works closely with health authorities to address the situation.We are deeply troubled by the increasing number of foodborne illness cases

Three individuals in Witpoortjie Estate, Brakpan, Ekurhuleni, suffered serious injuries when their vehicle veered out of control and landed on a railway line.

[LUSIKISIKI MASS MURDERS] suspects
The South African Police Service (SAPS) is requesting members of the public for urgent assistance in tracing four wanted dangerous suspects possibly linked to the Lusikisiki mass murders.

Through preliminary investigations, police have reason to believe that the following four suspects would be able to assist the police in solving the Lusikisiki mass murder case.

Police investigations are at an advanced stage and tracing operations are underway for these four wanted suspects.

They are, 20-year-old Songezo ‘Mashiya’ Vuma, 31-year-old Bonga ‘Rico’ Hintsa, 25-year-old Aphiwe ‘AP’ Ndende and 31-year-old Lwando Anthony ‘Abi’ Shakes.

Members of the public are cautioned not to confront these suspects as they are considered to be dangerous and may be heavily armed.

Members of the public are urged to come forward with any information regarding the whereabouts of these suspects.

Anyone with information on their whereabouts is encouraged to contact the SAPS Organised Crime or the SAPS Serious and Violent Crimes Investigation team on 082 302 7762. All information will be treated with confidentiality. Callers may remain anonymous.

The four suspects are also advised to hand themselves over at a nearest police station.

NEWS: KZN man arrested for allegedly killing five family members

The incident occurred on Saturday evening at the man’s home in the Bethany area in Bergville.

“Reports indicate that the suspect and his uncle went to visit the neighbours and on their return, the suspect found his mother sitting in the lounge with others. Information further suggests that the suspect took a knife... and stabbed his mother, who managed to run outside of the house.

“Thereafter, he turned his attention to his uncle, who died in the passage as he tried to flee to the neighbours. The suspect went on to stab and kill two girl children, aged two and six years. The blood thirsty suspect also stabbed and killed a woman who was living with disability, as well as another elderly woman who had visited the house. The suspect's mother and another four-year-old girl survived with multiple stab wounds.

“The suspect’s sister managed to run to safety with her one-year-old baby. The exact ages of the other victims are yet to be verified. Preliminary investigations have confirmed that the suspect had several domestic violence related cases opened against him. However, all of them were later voluntarily withdrawn,” police said in a statement.

The man is expected to appear in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Former finance minister and SA Reserve Bank (Sarb) governor Tito Mboweni has sadly passed away at the age of 65.

Mboweni’s family announced his passing on Saturday night.

“It is with deep sadness that the Mboweni Family announces the passing of Mboweni,” read the statement.

“The family is devastated by Governor Mboweni’s passing after a short illness. He passed away in a hospital in Johannesburg on Saturday night, surrounded by his loved ones.

The family requested privacy saying they were coming to terms with the enormous loss.

Further details will be released over the next few days.

The statement was issued by Alto Mboweni on behalf of the Mboweni family.
