Today is the 31ST and I was called to be on standby at work. I woke up early and started making jam for Lindo’s family. After sending Lindo with 3 bottles, I got more requests.

His uncle asked me to make a fig and watermelon jar for him. I thought I would have more time to perfect it should it not work but now here I am cooking and ironing my uniform.

“Mma Vilakazi, are you still joining us for the count down at Triple L, is there anything you will need?” I read a text from Lindo.

“My uncle’s will fine you for calling me by your name. I am unfortunately preparing for work.” I text back.

“Work? I thought you were only going back on the 4th.” Lindo says on the call.

“Hey, yes, I am officially working on the 4th, I am on standby, and I have a feeling I will be called to work. So, I will just hang around the office then rest in the car a bit.” I explain my plan.

“Eish, let me give you the house keys so that you can stay there and watch movies or something.”

“Nah, don’t worry.”

“Sweetie are you still here?” My dad says from the dining room.

“Yes, I’m on the phone.” I shout back.

“Sorry about that, you were saying?” I ask.

“I was saying, I am bringing the keys actually I am taking you to work then to the house. I will come back later mo Sosha. I will be there in an hour. Shap.” He hangs up.

I switch off the iron and go to my dad. I find him sorting his Cd's.

“Dad, there’s something I wanted to run past you, but I don’t want you to think that you did anything wrong.” I stutter.

“Do you want to meet your mother?” He asks.
My heart rate increases, I nod a yes to him. He gives me the warmest smile. I smile back.

“How did you know?” I ask.

“I raised you Gugu, when something bothers you, you always bake and try new flavours. She also wants to meet you, she called me saying she saw you in Orchard. I told her that I needed to tell you first.”

“Do you mind me meeting her?” I ask.

“I will never deny you that opportunity besides you are old enough to decide for yourself.” Lindo.

“When I meet her, will I find out things about you? Like did you fight with her or something?” I ask.

“Not that I know of, we had been fighting over getting our own house but the week she left we were doing well, we did not fight at all. I believed we were good.” He says thoughtfully.

“Okay, let me get dressed, my lift will be here soon.”

“What lift? Wajola nana.” He asks.

I run to my bedroom and change into my black jeans and a white blouse. I close my overnight bag and put my shoes on top, my dad stares at me when I put my bag and uniform on the couch.

I pour the jams into containers, and I put 3 in the fridge and 5 in a plastic bag. I pack 4 pieces of pork and I take half a loaf of bread as my lunchbox.

“I thought I would buy you a cold drink at the garage when I dropped you off, I guess your ‘lift’ will buy you some.” He says laughing.

“I love you dad, happy new year. I hope you find love.” I hug him instead.

“I love you too. I wish you love as well and happiness.” He says and my phone rings, Lindo saying he is at the corner because his uncle says he cannot stand in front of my father’s house.

My dad laughs when I ask him to help me carry my things because Lindo does not want to come in. My dad has my bags and I the uniform hanger, phone, and charger.

Lindo gets out of the car when he sees us approaching the car. He takes off his cap and shakes my dad’s hand; he then opens the backseat door.

My dad hands the bags to Lindo and greets us walking back to the house. Lindo puts my belongings in the car.

“Hello beautiful, you smell so nice.” He says sniffing my neck.’

“You do know that we have surveillance that reaches this corner, and my dad is probably watching us.” I say laughing.

Lindo pushes me away so fast, I cannot stop laughing at his face. He opens the door for me then he jogs to his side.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” He asks flushed.

“I thought you knew. Why are you all boss looking today?” He is wearing a navy suit pants with a white and navy stripe shirt and a navy tie.

“I had a meeting with a potential client. I want us to supply them with your jam and our eggs and juice at their hotel.” Lindo.

“My jam?” I ask.

“Yes, I took the bottle you had for my mother as a sample, and they loved it. I was going to tell you once they approved and sent a contract, I would have you and your lawyer check it out. That will be in 3 weeks.” Lindo.

“You mean my jam, like the one I make?” I ask shocked.

“Yes love, I told you I want you to build an empire for yourself not that I cannot provide for you, I want you to be independent and have your own legacy not tied to being a Vilakazi. I have a few businesses; I want you to be successful.” He goes on and on.

I am still stuck on the Vilakazi and him supplying a hotel with my jam. I never thought of selling the jam, I thought they were joking over Christmas.

“You did that for me?” I ask still surprised.

“Yes, my love, I did. Oh, we owe my mother.” Lindo.

“I have jam in the plastic bag, when you come back you can pass by and drop it off.”

“We will take it now.” He says changing the route to his mother’s house.

We arrive after 20minutes, Lindo parks outside the garage. He opens the door for me, and I take out the jam. He holds my hand as we walk into the house using the back door.

“Mama, someone’s here to see you.” Lindo says.

“Lindo, until you bring my jam don’t talk to me.” His mother says from another room. Lindo walks us to the passage to the main bedroom, he knocks on the door then he opens the door.

“Lindo Vilakazi, what did I say?” Mama.

“Oh Gugu, how are you, my child? This idiot of yours took my jam.” She greets.

“I am well mama Lindo, he told me. I brought some with me. I made the fig and watermelon for Lindo’s uncle. There is also a strawberry flavour in the kitchen.”

“Thank you so much. I did not know you were coming; I have not baked scones. I have biscuits though you can make yourself tea.” mama.

“Gugu has to go to work.” Lindo.

“I will take some biscuits with me and drink tea when I get to work. I might work the whole night.” I say and her face lightens up. She gets up from her bed saying she will look for a container for me to pack in.

We leave the house with a 2liter container filled with biscuits. Lindo drives me to work, I enter and check if I am needed. I am told to go home, and they will call if need be.

“I do not know man; I did not force her. We both wanted it or at least that's what I thought.” I hear Lindo from outside the door shout then the door opens.

“Gugu’s why are you crying? Did Lindo hurt you?” Mpumi asks removing the covers.

“Mpumi, I am fine please let me sleep.” I say with my eyes closed.

“Not until, you tell me why you are crying.” Mpumi.

“I have a headache.” I lie.

“Why didn’t you say? I will get you tablets, where is your bag?” She asks getting off the bed.

Lindo directs her to the bags, and I lay down again without looking at them. I can feel their eyes on me. Mpumi brings the glass of water and my medication bag. I open my eyes looking down, avoiding eye contact with Lindo and Lu. I thank Mpumi and get back into the sheets.

“We will see you in the morning.” Lu says.
“Sure sure.” Lindo responds.

He locks the door and switches off the lights. I feel his weight on the bed; he moves closer to me and spoons me. I try moving away but he moves towards me.

“You are going to fall.” He says pulling me to him.

“If you move away then I won’t.”

“I love cuddling you, what’s your problem?” he asks.
The nerve he has to ask me nonsense.

“How dare you ask me that after what you said? So, I am not good enough for s*x, but I am a good cuddle toy. Shem I will get you a bear, leave me alone.” I spit getting off the bed.

“What are you on about? Gugu stop this nonsense and get to bed.” He says switching on the lamp.
He gets off the bed and joins me on the couch. I try pushing him off, but he does not budge. I let him be.

“Tell me what you are on about.” He says breathing on my neck.

“You said you should not have slept with me. That made me feel like a cheap thrill.” I inform.

“I am sorry you misunderstood me and that I did not elaborate. I meant that I wanted to ask you to be my woman before we slept together that way, we know we are in it for the love and not the s*x.” He tells.

“You don’t have to lie to me, to make me feel better.”

“Gugu, I am being truthful. Please next time you do not like anything I say. You let me know immediately so that we can sort it out. I like you a lot, I do not want to lie and say I love you because I do not know you enough for that.” He says tickling me.

“I am sorry I hurt your feeling.” He says kissing my lips.

“Hai, stop kissing me. Next thing I know I am not wanted.” I tease.

“Wabona wathoma.” He reprimands.
We both laugh; he asks that we go back to bed because his neck hurts on the couch.

We get into bed and talk about our dreams and places we still want to visit. We sleep in the early of the morning.

We are late for breakfast; Lu came to wake us up. We hurried into the shower together and then we got dressed and went out to join Lindo’s family.

“The prodigal couple has returned.” Kgotso says.

“Gugu, come sit next to me.” His aunt.
I try walking to her, but Lindo pulls me to him and leads me to the open chairs.

His mother laughs. His aunt moves seats and sits next to me much to Lindo’s approval. They bring our food while I chat to his aunt. Lindo is clearly irritated by this.

“Can you stay away from my girlfriend? You always take them away from me.” He says to his aunt.

“Lindo, if we don’t like them you cry, we love them you cry hai man.” His aunt throws a napkin at him.

“I am not saying be mean to them, I am simply saying give me time with them.” He requests.

“Lindo, she is going home with you, that is enough time. Ai Gugu, I guess I will see you next weekend. Lindo, I booked her for Saturday morning.” She stands up.

I nod at the aunt and I finish my food. We are told that we are leaving as a convoy in 30 minutes. I take the time to talk to Nombi. Since I have not since her this morning, and she never came back for dinner.

“Mama bana.” I greet.

“Motho wa Lindo.” She greets back.

“How did you sleep? How are you feeling today?” I ask.

“I slept well thanks, I spoke to Kgotso, and I realized that we have been over for years now. We broke up and I will move back home full time.

He says I can go to school, and he will pay for me, that is the least he can do for me, so yeah, I am going to do distance learning and get a job for my kids.” She confesses.

“I am proud of you. Here is my number you can contact me whenever. I am going to work this week maybe next week we can go have coffee together?” I say giving her a hug.

“Yeah cool, I will text you. Thank you again for being nice to me.” Nombi.

I walk back to our room, and I find Lindo sulking. I ignore him and I pack my bags and put his belongings next to him, he packs as well then pulls me to him.

“I am going to miss this when we get back home.” He confesses.

“I will miss you too, but you can always come visit me.” I say hugging him.

“Will you also visit me?” he asks.

“Of cause I will, I am working next week, I might even sleep over since you are closer to work.”
Lindo pulls me on top of him. Asking if I mean what I am saying.

Truth is I was joking but seeing him this excited I cannot disappoint him. I promise that I will sleepover Friday and leave Sunday after lunch. He takes our bags to the car where we meet the rest of his family.

“Makoti, I will be expecting my order of jam on Monday morning. Lindo will pay for my delivery at work.” His uncle says.

“I will bring it during my lunch time; please don’t forget to send me the address.”

“Malume, are you also joining this team?’ Lindo asks.

“What team? I just want jam nothing else. What is that word your young people saying? Black business support that is what I am doing.” He says giving both of us a hug.

“I also want jam.” Lindo’s mother and aunt say.

“Aunty, you will get it on Saturday. Mama, Lindo will bring after he drops me off.”

“Why am I not getting a special delivery? Am I broke for you?’ Lindo’s mother asks.

“No mama Lindo, I will bring it Tuesday after work, I will ask my dad to lend me his car.”

“You better, I will make scones.” Mama. The drive home is quicker than when we dove up. Lindo drops his mother and Ole 1st then he offers to take me home after checking on the club. Lu takes his car and drives home with Mpumi while I wait for Lindo.

“No, the more the merrier.” She confirms.

“Great, may I make a suggestion?” I ask.

“Have you conceded maybe hosting it here in the lodge and have the seminar a weekend long event?

To raise funds and pay for those women who cannot afford it, instead of having it in Feb host it at the end of April, give people a 3-month payment plan.

Lindo says there is a spa here as well, the woman could get pampered on the Sunday or Saturday afternoon before dinner then Sunday a breakfast before departure. I am sorry I got carried away.” I say standing up.

‘let us go and sleep.’

I see a text Lindo sent 10 minutes ago. I look around and I see him standing up coming towards me. He kisses his mother’s cheek saying we are going to bed.

“No Lindo, we are still talking to Gugu, she has great ideas.” His mother.

“Yes, I love that idea. You should give me your numbers and I will call you so you can help me plan.” The aunt.

“She is expensive can you afford her?” Lindo chips in.

“I will pay her anything, how much would they pay?” She asks.

“I do not know, does the spa offer group discounts? How many people can they treat per session? How much does this place charge for meals per person?

Transport will depend on how much Lindo’s mother charges per trip here. You have to think of the menu, the drinks you want served, and the goodie bags. These should make people want to pay up and be excited to leave their lives behind to join you.”

“What are you planning?” Lindo.

“Shh. Gugu how do you think on the spot, I have not thought that far. What would you do?” His mother.

“I would have a pj party on Friday, play games to introduce everyone then have dinner a simple dumpling and chicken or beef something homey. Saturday, we have breakfast buffet style full breakfast,

the seminar starts to get one woman who had a rough start and is doing well now to get them to speak after breakfast, we have the draw then closing.

“Then go prep for the spa treatment and receive the goodie bags, then go change for dinner which will be a braai with sides, cocktails and soft drinks served.

Listen to music till sleep time. Sunday morning a high tea breakfast then we check out at 12pm. Ladies will be dropped off in Pretoria central or Jhb to get transport home.

“A week later I would send the ladies texts asking them questions on their experiences and how they would want us to change and improve moving forward. For payments I would open a separate account so that the money does not mix with…”

“Hai, I am sleepy. Let us go to sleep, you will talk to them tomorrow.” Lindo says.

“Lindo you are being rude.” His mother.

“No mama, we are sleepy.” Lindo says laughing.

“You better use condoms; we don’t want more babies before marriage.” Lindo’s mother says.
Lindo and I run from the adults laughing. He is holding my hand which I let go of when I see we are safe. Lindo chases me. I run as fast as I can, but he catches me.

“You can run yho.” He says out of breath.

“What can I say, you never know what man wants to have you.” I say with my hands around his neck, my lips brushing his.

“Is that so?” He asks kissing me with his hands rubbing my bums.

He picks me up, my legs around his waist. He walks with me to our room.

“Don’t drop me.” I say in between the kisses after getting into the room, he chuckles on my lips then he pins me on the wall.

The kissing intensifies, his hands rubbing seductively on my thighs, turn my stove on a high. We move to the bed; I am on my back only left with my bra; Lindo puts his cold hand on my nana leaving me shivering.

His find my ni***es which he assaults with his fingers. Our kiss intensifies, I fill his length on my entrance, wetness from both of us makes the entry a little easier, I flinch a bit when he starts moving.

Like a musician finds his muse, we move together at a steady pace until we both find our release. I am breathless under him as he kisses my face, his hot breath making me shiver.

“You made me break a promise to myself.” He says getting off me and the bed.
“What promise?” I ask.

“I promised myself not to sleep with you, I am sorry I got carried away.” He says wiping me with a warm towel. I take the towel from him and get off the bed, feeling ashamed. I lock the bathroom door.

I get into the shower and open the water to hide my sobs. I leave the shower feeling lighter. My eyes are heavy and swollen; I hate them for exposing me. I switch off the lights then I go to the room to sleep. Lindo is on the bed; he puts his phone as I walk to my side.

“Why are your eyes red? Did I hurt you? Did you not want? Gugu what ist?” He asks.

“Nothing, good night.” I cover my head.

“No Gugu, you are crying. Did I force you?” he asks but I continue ignoring him. Lindo eventually leaves the room. I cry more under the covers.

‘I wish I could carry your hurt my child, I want you to know that I love you, you are beautiful, and I would not trade you for anything in the world. I do not know why she left what I know is that she is missing out on the best gift ever’.

I love you my dad said that night. I overheard him say he would not want a woman who did not love me to hurt me.

“When I had my 1st period, he bought so many different pads, let us just say it was a fun mess. He perfected plaiting hair.

I heard she called Mpumi’s mother asking to meet me, I have been refusing because why now? I do not need her especially after she broke my dad’s heart.

I think I am ready now; I want answers from her. I am getting older; I may get married or have kids one day I want to fix things if it works with her before that.

“I am financially stable now; she will see that I do not want her money. Maybe we can have a relationship and if she does not want me then I will let her be. I would have tried.”

“That was a lot for a small person. I got you now.” Lindo.

“Were you serious about me selling the jam to you? I have a mixed berry, separate berries, peach, and apricot. I could make big jars for you or maybe small bottles to sample and see if people like them.

I want to get them in stores someday, tomorrow you must taste the fig flavour my dad loves it, but he loves anything I make so he is not really a good taster… I talk too much don’t I?” I say laughing. Lindo is looking at me smiling.

“I love watching you talk. Continue please.” He smiles.

“Nah, you tell me about you.”

“I have nothing to tell you, aren’t you hungry?” He asks.

We have been chatting for so long, I did not even hear my alarm. I check the time and after 8pm. I get my leg over Lindo so that I can get off the couch and he holds me tightly over him.

I blush hiding in his neck because I am all up in my feelings, hot and bothered by being this close to him. He lifts my head and kisses my forehead.

His arms are around my body. He moves his lips on my jaws and finally reaches my lips. The kisses are soft as feathers.

A knock comes through bringing us back to reality. Lindo pulls me closer to him when I try to pull back. He continues kissing me gently caressing my bums.

“Lindo, Lindo jo bula mo.” A voice says from the door. I tried moving once but Lindo sucks on my neck making me lose my breath. “Lindo. Please.” I beg.

“He can call an ambulance or the cops if there’s an emergency.” He answers moving to my lips. He melodically grinds under me. My lace thongs get soaking underneath him.

In a flash he has me under him on the couch and it is just him and I, the knocking sound disappears with every grind and heated kisses. I find myself moaning at his length directly on my lace.

I try taking off his towel, he holds my hands above my head with one hand. I look up to face him and he shakes his head. The kissing gets less and slows down, he still has my hands in his.

The last kiss is on my forehead. We are both breathing heavily. He gives me one last get on my lips and gets up from the couch.

He gets into the bathroom, and I take off my panties then wipe myself. I put on my shoes fixing my hair. I rush out of the room and hurry to the dining area.

All eyes are on me as I take my seat, apologizing for being late. I look at the menu when the waiter comes and orders a glass of water with their grilled chicken salad with olives.

Lindo walks in looking with a strained face but relaxes when he looks at my chair. He sits next to me and drinks my water. I avoid his eyes, that makes him put his hand on my thigh, leaving me shivering.

“Why did you leave me?” He whispers but I ignore him.

I spend the rest of the night with Lindo caressing my thighs. He moves his hand slowly up when I hold conversations with his cousins.

I keep crossing my legs with each rub, which fuels him to pinch me. I side eye him and he smiles knowingly. Desert is served. Lindo pulls his hand up from under the table and he sniffs it.

“Keng wena?” Lu asks.

“Nex, mind your business.” Lindo.

“Why ongkgela matsogo?” Lu asks.

“Eh jo, now I can’t smell my own hands?” Lindo asks sipping on his gin and tonic. His uncle bursts into laughter; I look down embarrassed when Lu and Lindo join him.

“Why are you all laughing that side?” The aunt asks.

“Nex.” Lindo asks.

“Lindo…” His uncle starts.

“I will tell her about Tuesday.” Lindo threatens.
The uncle drinks his beer quietly. I am interested in knowing what could make him so quiet. I breathe better when dinner is over, and we move to the fire pit. I sit between Lindo’s mother and aunt, avoiding the space Lindo open for me.

‘You can run, but you can’t hide.’

A text from Lindo pops on my screen. I laugh out loudly after reading it. His mother gives me a questioning look. I ignore her looks and drink my wine.

“I am hosting a women empowerment seminar in Feb, and I’d love to have you there Gugu.” The aunt.

“Oh, uhm what’s it about?” I ask.

“I invite local women in business, and we talk about our challenges and give each other tips. We have a random draw where a winner gets R1000 and a website for a year. We have food and the tickets are sold atR150 p.p.” She informs.

“Okay, that sounds wonderful; if I am not deployed then I will come. You can give me a date to put in leave for now, I hope you understand if I cannot come but I will buy a ticket, can I invite people or is it a close circle thing?” I ask.

I open my eyes, a decision I will regret for the rest of this trip. He has a perfect body; I know there is no such thing as perfect, but his packs and v-line has me hot and bothered.

I quickly close my eyes facing the wall, I take a few breaths before telling him that I am good. I hear him chuckling.

“Why are you sleeping then?” He asks standing behind me, I swear he wants me bothered.

“I am just taking a break, sometimes people get too much for me.” I confess.

“Okay, come to the bed so we can chat.” He speaks.

“Nope, I am good thanks.” I answer.

“Alright.” He answers squeezing in behind me. My heart skips a beat.

“What are you doing?” I ask getting up.

“I want to know you better. Tell me more about your mother.” He says pushing my head down his chest.

“My dad’s ex you mean. You know, the last guy I opened up to about her, ended up using that against me. I do not trust people about that.”

“I am not that idiot, okay let me tell you something only people in my circle know.” He speaks.

“I am listening.”

“Rest on me.” He says when I try sitting up.

“I want to see you.” He loosens his hold allowing me to face him.

“What I am about to tell you stays between us and I want to assure you that I will protect you with my all. Ka Zula (I hustle) with Lu.” He speaks. I laugh because everyone knows that he is a hustler.

“Everyone knows that.”

“You do not understand me. Ka Zula as in ke le gintsa (I hustle as in am in a gang.)” He says with a serious face.

I laugh so hard that I have tears in my eyes falling. My laughter is cut short when he does not join me. I look for a smile on his face and I see nothing, h keeps his straight face and raised brow as if waiting for me to finish laughing.

“Wait, you are serious?” I ask.

“I swear on my mother’s life.” He speaks.

“Okay, my story is not as wild as yours but here goes. My parents had me when my mother was 17 years old, when I was born, she moved in with my dad who recently started working, he lived with his family at the family house because he was not earning much, and he had to pay for her to finish school.

“When I was 5 years old, my mother bathed me and dressed me up in a floral purple dress with white sandals in my going out outfit. I assumed we were going out because she also bathed.

She wore her sunflower dress which had a white belt, she smelled like sta-soft. She had 3 suitcases with her when we walked out, I thought we were going to visit my grandmother I was so excited.

“She walked us to this old lady’s house, we used to leave the house key with her whenever we went out and we would get it from her if no one were home yet.

She told me to wait outside while she spoke to the lady, leaving me with the bags. ‘I am taking these clothes to the hospital, and I will come back for you.’ She said while she knocked on the door.

“I stood by the door when they disappeared into the lounge. ‘I will be back shortly we have an emergency at home, and I can’t take Amantle with me.’ She told the old lady. They bumped into me by the door when she was walking her out hastily. My mother gave me a long tight hug. She cried telling me to take care of myself.

“I remembered she did not tell me that she loves me like she usually did and when I tried running after her the old lady locked the gate. I stayed there until my grandmother came back from work. I did not want to leave because my mother had promised to fetch me there, hai you know black grandmothers.

“My grandmother forcefully took me back home kicking and screaming. I was crying hysterically when my father arrived a few minutes later, he picked me up and we went to their room outside. My dad found me crying when he came home. Bless that man’s soul. He comforted me until I slept. This was the beginning of our sharing of his room.

“I had hoped that my mother would return that little bubble burst when I opened the closet to show my dad that she took all her clothes. My dad was hurt; I could see the panic in his eyes,

“That month was the hardest for everyone in the house. I would catch my grandmother wiping her tears away when she looked at me.

My dad always had his arm around me tightly when we sat watching the television. My grandmother allowed us to eat watching TV; she hated it so much saying we never finished our food.

“One afternoon when the schools open, I got home and found my mother’s side of the family at home claiming they came for me.

That old man tried forcing me into the car, regardless of my grandmother’s pleas for them to wait for my dad. I ran to the lady who used to plait my hair. my dad moved me to Mpumi’s.

“He bought a house and we moved in on Christmas Eve. I remember laughing when I saw the new house roof, who paints houses green? I was happy though to be with my dad, the house only had 1 bed in my dad’s bedroom and a fridge, we bought most of the furniture together but for a long time we sat on those plastic chairs.

“I used to cry a lot when I missed my mother, I stopped crying openly when I realized how much it hurt my dad. That crazy woman messed up my birthday after I begged my dad to go visit her. She never showed up.

I cried that whole weekend. I heard nothing from her for another 3 years. When I was 9, we bumped into her at the mall in Centurion with a little girl.

“She looked happy, laughing with the little girl, when she saw us, she came to greet us, she introduced the girl as ‘Larona her daughter’ that hurt so much, I started thinking something was wrong with me, why couldn’t she love me? ran to the bathroom crying. Mpumi and her mother followed me; we left the mall.

Lunch is enjoyed with classic festive music. The food is delicious with a good wine pairing. We are instructed to change into our beige outfits for the 5pm game drive. Lindo and I walk together.

“So, spill the tea, what happened on the 10th?” I ask.

“I will tell you one day. Why are you looking for your father’s ex? I hope you do not mind me asking.” Lindo.

“I want to understand why she left me and never looked back.”

“Oh, I am sorry for asking. I can help you find her if you want.” Lindo.

“Let me speak to my dad first, that man put his life on hold for me. If he is okay with this, then we will look for her.”

We change and go back to the conference room to meet everyone. Mpumi walks to me with a glass of mojito. I thank her and take a seat.

“Don’t attack me mara fam are we all going to ignore that prayer about finding a lover.” Mpumi says with a serious face. Nombi walks away from us, I feel bad for her.

“Mpumi, no that’s mean.”

“Mara, I want to know.” Mpumi. I know better than to argue with a drinking Mpumi. I walk to the direction I saw Nombi walking in, and I find her crying by the rose bushes.

“Hey, I know we are not friends, but can I hug you?” I ask.

“Why are you here to gloat?” She spits.

“No, Nombi I came to apologize and to see if you were okay.” I say opening my arms for her.
She walks to me and cries for a good minute, when she is done, we walk to the bathroom. “It hurts so bad, it hurts Gugu.” She starts crying again.

“Nombi, I do not know much about you, but I know God sees everything and he restores. Let us pray to get through this.” I suggest.

“You know I thought things would change after my 2nd born but we just drifted further apart. Sometimes I wish I had not fallen pregnant. How will I survive without him? My life is over.” She cries.

“No, Nombi do not say that. You are going to get through this. I will help you fix yourself up when we get home so you can be the best mum to your kids.”

“You don’t understand, I missed studying opportunities to be with him.” She informs.

“Bona, let’s get your face ready so that we don’t miss the drive, you are going to lift your head up and enjoy this day, paye6d full vacation for the last time and tomorrow evening we start working on you.”

“Why are you being so nice?” She asks washing her face.

“Because sometimes all we need is a friend. Now finish up and let us go, do not sit next to him sit with me.” I coax.

“Thank you.” Nombi says.

We walk out and find the cars waiting for us. Nombi joins me in the car, we are with Lindo, Lu and Mpumi. We sit in the backseat. Lindo asks for a picture of him and I, Mpumi takes it he then takes a seat.

We come across the herd of elephants, and I take pictures. Nombi is laughing when Lindo photo bombs my pictures. An hour later we are back at the lodge.

Kgotso asks to speak to Nombi when we get off the car, she refuses and walks with me to the bathroom.

“I don’t think I can face him; my chest is closing.” She cries.

“You are stronger than your thoughts. Listen to my voice and breathe.” I lie.

She starts breathing in and out. Calming herself down.

“Babe, we are going to enjoy our last night here, we are drinking cocktails till the sun comes out. Tomorrow morning, we eat breakfast and nurse our hangover then we travel home.” I coax.

“Thank you.” She says holding my hand.
We walk back to the Lapa. Lindo walks to me and gives me a hug, he asks if I am still okay. I nod and take my seat.

The evening is going well until Kgotso walks over to us demanding to talk to Nombi. He seems drunk, his cousins try stopping him from walking to our side, but he gets louder.

“I’d like to talk to you Nombi.” Kgotso says.
“Kgotso take a walk, go wash your face now.” Lindo pleads.

“What now I cannot talk to the mother of my children? She is here because of me, you know I could have brought my girl but instead she is here, I just want to…” Kgotso slurs. Lindo and Lu pull him out.

“Are you okay?” I ask her to hold her hand.

“Yes, I am going to nap I’ll be back for dinner.” She hastily stands up.

“I will walk with you; will he not bother you in the room?” I ask as we walk.

“No, we don’t sleep together.” Her answer leaves me even more confused as to when they started having problems.

When we get to her door, she promises that she is okay and locks. I walk to Lindo’s room to change my shoes. Lindo walks in 5 minutes later dripping wet from head to toe. I open my mouth to ask and close it quickly before I say.

He walks to the bathroom, and I hear the shower running. I call my dad who is happy to hear from me. I tell him that I need to speak to him when I get home and he laughs saying, I cannot dump him.

I hang up and set an alarm for 8pm because dinner is at 8: 30pm. I lay on the couch with my eyes closed to give Lindo a bit of privacy when he gets out of the shower.

“Gugu, why are you sleeping? Are you feeling sick?” He asks a few minutes later.
