Bafana’s Next World Cup Qualifying Venue Taking Shape
Bafana Bafana players during the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers 2026 match against Nigeria

Bafana Bafana’s next 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda could be heading to Mpumalanga, with strong indications that Mbombela Stadium may be the chosen venue.

While Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie recently hinted on X that the fixture might be staged at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha, Siya sources have suggested that Mbombela is emerging as the likely option for next month’s all-important clash.

At this stage, the venue has not been confirmed by SAFA, and it is worth noting that these decisions can change depending on several logistical and operational factors. An official announcement is still expected in due course.

Mbombela Stadium, which has proven to be a popular football venue over the years, will also be in the spotlight this coming weekend as it hosts the 2025 MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC.

Meanwhile, Bafana edged closer to securing a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Nigeria at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday.

Hugo Broos’ men currently sit at the top of Group C with 17 points, three clear of second-placed Benin, who defeated Lesotho in their latest outing.

Should Mbombela be confirmed, it would mark another major event for the Mpumalanga province and provide Broos’ charges with a vibrant stage as they continue their qualification push.

A man on trial for the deadly Usindiso fire that killed 76 people and injured 12 others said he had lied about having started the fire because he wanted to go to prison as he knew he would get food and shelter there.

Sithembiso Mdlalose , 32, broke down in tears while in the dock in Palm Ridge magistrate's court on Wednesday as he read his statement in which he said he spent three years living on the streets and could not go back to that life.

“I didn't kill anyone, I just wanted to go to prison because they would provide me with food and shelter.”

According to Mdlalose, his boss, known as Master, was the one who caused the fire after assaulting a man.

“The only crime that you can convict me on is lying under oath. Sometimes when I sit back, I admire and say, how good was I to be able to convince even the magistrate that I might have been the one who started the fire.”

Senior magistrate Pieter du Plessis was the one who recorded Mdlalose’s confession in January last year.

According to Mdlalose, he lied in his confession because he “just wanted a new life” as prison would offer him shelter and food.

He also claimed to have seen Master pouring petrol on the assaulted man.

“I found Master on the first floor and he was angry with me because I took time and did not come back with petrol. We then went to the room where there was a guy who was assaulted and I saw there was a guard at the door. When I entered the room with Master I saw the contents on the floor, which had petrol inside. I noticed that the guy who was assaulted was sitting on the chair, his head and upper body bent looking down, and did not have any movement.

🚨 EU gives Ukraine 'blank cheque for ENDLESS WAR' — Hungary's PM

According to Orban, Brussels wants to admit a country with:

❌ no clear borders
❌ no functioning economy
❌ no sovereignty

"Ukraine CANNOT SUSTAIN ITSELF. Alongside the Americans, we are the ones keeping it afloat, not only its army but also the functioning of its ENTIRE state administration," Viktor Orban said.

💬"And they expect EU taxpayers to fund a million-strong army for decades. This is NOT peace," the prime minister added.
