43 - YEAR OLD MAN CONFIRMED DEAD IN A HORROR R71 CRASH

PHALABORWA: The fatal accident occurred on the R71, involving a truck and a light motor vehicle has been cleared.

However, the collision resulted in the death of the 43-year-old male driver of the light motor vehicle.

The road was closed for more than four hours as emmergency personnel were clearing the scene on Friday morning.

Preliminary reports suggest that reckless driving may have contributed to the accident, with the light motor vehicle allegedly overtaking on a barrier line and colliding head-on with the truck.

The road between Gravelotte and Phalaborwa has been opened and motorists are advised to continue driving with caution and adhere to road safety rules to prevent such incidents.

Freedom Front Plus demands answers regarding dangerous R510 route and questionable tender allocation in Waterberg District

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) demands answers from the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) regarding its handling of the R510 road project between Northam and Thabazimbi, which poses a serious threat to public safety.

According to a report by Thabazimbi Fire and Rescue, there have been 38 accidents on this road in just one month (between July and August this year). These accidents are mainly attributable to potholes, the absence of road shoulders and a lack of road signs.

The contractor, Joden, appointed by SANRAL, abandoned the unfinished R510 project in November 2024, resulting in unsafe road conditions.

Despite this, the contractor was awarded a new contract to upgrade another road in the Waterberg District. This raises serious questions about SANRAL’s tender processes and commitment to accountability.

As a member of Limpopo’s Provincial Committee on Transport and Community Safety, the Freedom Front Plus says it will raise the matter with the provincial government and demand answers regarding both the completion of the R510 project and why a new contract was awarded to a company that failed to complete its previous contract.

The party calls on SANRAL to immediately provide clarity on these issues and implement concrete measures to ensure the R510 is safe.

A safe and reliable road network is absolutely crucial for the economic prosperity of the Waterberg District and protecting motorists' lives.

The party will keep a close eye on the matter, and if need be, take further steps to ensure that public safety and accountability come first.

MEC MATHYE URGES RESPONSIBLE ROAD USE AS TRAVELLERS HEAD TO LIMPOPO

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety is fully prepared to manage the anticipated surge in road traffic, as thousands of travellers converge on the province for religious gatherings taking place from 5 to 7 September 2025.

To ensure a smooth flow of traffic and the safety of all road users, traffic law enforcement officers have been strategically deployed along major routes and critical intersections, including the N1, N11, R101, R81, R71, R579, R37, R36, R40, R528, R574, R516, R521, D4040, D19, R524 and R523.

Law enforcement operations will maintain a zero-tolerance approach towards reckless behaviour, such as speeding, overloading, drunk driving, and the use of unroadworthy vehicles. Motorists are equally urged to take responsibility by ensuring their vehicles are roadworthy, that all occupants wear seatbelts, and by avoiding fatigue and distractions such as mobile phone use while driving.

MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Ms Violet Mathye, extended a warm welcome to all visitors entering the province: “As we come together for these important gatherings, I appeal to all road users, whether visiting from afar or travelling within Limpopo, to make safety their top priority. Please drive with patience, care and respect for others. Avoid fatigue, speeding and overloading, which remain among the leading causes of crashes. On behalf of the Provincial Government, I wish you safe travels, a peaceful stay and a safe return home.”
