Eskom Limpopo employees in the Capricorn District have installed load-limiting devices in Mokopane, Zebediela, and Lebowakgomo.

Load limiting is a demand management solution that allows Eskom to limit the maximum output power of a smart meter for a predefined period, with the purpose of controlling demand in consultation with customers. Customers are encouraged to switch off high-consuming appliances, such as geysers, stoves, washing machines, and pool pumps during this period. If such appliances are not switched off, the meter will disconnect the supply for a configured period and display the reasons for the disconnection. In this case, the meter will display “Power overload."

UNIT 4 AT MEDUPI POWER STATION RETURNS TO SERVICE

Eskom says Unit 4 of its Medupi power station has been successfully returned to service, eight months ahead of its original schedule, adding 800 megawatts to the national grid.

The power utility said this milestone strengthens South Africa’s energy security and enhances the stability of the electricity supply.

LOADSHEDDING TO DOWNGRADE TO STAGE 2

Stage 4 loadshedding will continue to be implemented until 5:00 AM on Tuesday. Thereafter, loadshedding will be reduced to Stage 2 until further notice.

Eskom says this decision follows the successful recovery of eight out of ten generation units and the restoration of 3 808MW from units that tripped over the weekend, with an additional 1 146MW expected to be recovered overnight.

"While the recovery of the emergency reserves is progressing well, further replenishment is required to reach sufficient levels.

These positive developments support our ongoing focused efforts to stabilise the power supply and ensure reliability," Eskom said in a statement on Monday night.

Currently, unplanned outages are at 13 690MW, which is 690MW higher than our summer outlook base case of 13 000MW. Ongoing planned maintenance stands at 7 245MW, in alignment with our summer period maintenance strategy, that is at increased levels in order to prepare for winter and meet licence and regulatory requirements.

Eskom says it will provide the next update on Tuesday, 25 February 2025, or as soon as any significant changes occur.

ESKOM RAMPS UP LOADSHEDDING TO STAGE 6

Eskom has announced that Stage 6 loadshedding was implemented at 1:30am due to multiple unit trips at Camden Power Station and will continue until further notice.

The power utility says this measure followed the implementation of Stage 3, necessitated by multiple unit trips at Majuba Power Station and a unit trip at Medupi that resulted in a loss of 3 864 MW in generation capacity, while planned maintenance accounted for 7 506 MW. Additionally to replenish emergency reserves and prepare for the week ahead.

A media briefing will be held today at 11:00 to provide more details and updates on the power system.

ESKOM ALERT | LOAD SHEDDING RETURNS

After 20 days of uninterrupted power supply, Eskom has announced that load shedding will begin tonight, February 22.

In a statement, Eskom cited temporary setbacks as the cause of the sudden power cuts.

Stage 3 load shedding has been implemented from 17:30 on Saturday evening with no specified end date.

UNPLANNED POWER OUTAGE | 📌 THABAZIMBI

There is an unplanned power outage affecting several areas due to a tree located on the overhead power line at Regorogile Extension 5. The following areas are impacted:

- Regorogile Extensions 5 & 6
- Thaba Mall
- Thaba-Junction
- Industrial Area
- SASSA
- Thabazimbi Hospital Areas

The maintenance team is currently assessing the situation and will take immediate action to resolve the issue.
