Development of towns

THE United Democratic Movement (UDM) held a march on Wednesday in Mthatha to hand over a memorandum highlighting the plight of the people in the region to the provincial’s premier, Noxolo Keviet.
“The premier and the provincial government seem disinterested in developing Mthatha and other towns within the OR Tambo region which falls in the former Transkei UDM said it seems as if they are deliberately left to rot,” read the memorandum.
Addressing the audience outside the Botha S’gcawu building, the party’s president Bantu Holomisa said, “All we’ve done here is compile a list of problems coming from the villages and cities of OR Tambo, and we are bringing them to the attention of the premier.”
He said the memorandum highlights issues that affect day to day service delivery, “and people have also expressed the condition of the roads.”
“From Flagstaff to Lusikisiki to Port St Johns, and Mthatha you are welcomed by potholes right through and people are beginning to wonder ‘have we been forgotten by the government?’” he said.
Asked about the assistance of the presidential interventions in the region, Holomisa said they are a drop in the ocean. “Presidential interventions in Mthatha started with Mandela and Mbeki and now Zuma. We have welcomed all of those interventions. But they are a drop in the ocean. That’s why we are calling upon the infrastructure committee in the president’s office to publish a map which would include the areas like the Transkei because we seem to be lacking far behind the cape,” he said.
He said if the president is wise, he will delegate its provincial minister to make sure the services reach the people. The party’s regional secretary, Mabandla Gogo, said they have targeted the region due to the neglect it receives which rattles the leaders it has produced. “Most leaders of the ruling party and the government come from this region, but the kind of neglect on this particular region does not match the kind of leaders we have produced. It was for that reason we targeted the OR Tambo to have this march here today.”
Handling the memorandum on behalf of the premier, provincial head of the department of Communications Mxolisi Mfazwe said it is the people’s right to march if they are not content with the municipality services.
Mabandla said they are giving the premier 14 days to disseminate the information to other municipalities, “and if there is no response, we will take it up to the president.”
