PLEASE cooperate, it is bitterly dry, and as a result, the vegetation is very flammable. Do not set off fireworks anywhere in the greater Ward 11 - be the solution, not the problem.

Mossel Bay Municipality reminds all residents and visitors that a stringent by-law is in place regarding the use of fireworks.

❌ No fireworks may be set off in public places, or within 500 metres of a public place, without official permission. These permissions are only granted by the South African Police Services (SAPS) Bomb Disposal Unit.

The Mossel Bay Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management Services are only responsible for fire safety inspections at approved pyrotechnic events. These are approved by the South African Police Service.

Please note that SAPS is the mandated authority for the keeping and sale of fireworks. Only four retailers in Mossel Bay have been approved by SAPS to sell fireworks legally.

Municipal officials, together with other role players, will conduct continuous inspections at shops across all areas. Confiscation notices and fines will be issued to non-compliant shops.

During the December holiday season, municipal law enforcement officials are vigilant in patrolling public spaces to monitor:
• The sale of prohibited fireworks
• The possession and discharge of fireworks in public places

All confiscated items will be handed to SAPS for disposal.

• Fines of R1500 to R2000 apply for the unlawful discharge of fireworks.
• Setting off marine flares for fun is dangerous, irresponsible, and illegal. Offenders will be held responsible for any damages caused.

📞 To report the discharge of fireworks, call SAPS Joint Operation Centre at 044 606 5000. Witnesses may also make an affidavit at a police station, which can lead to further investigation and prosecution.

is spread mainly through bites, scratches, and saliva. Always observe Cape fur seals from a safe distance. DO NOT approach or touch them. Protect yourself and others.

This safety rule applies to all wildlife, as rabies is endemic in many wild mammal species in South Africa.

❌ Dit is streng verbode om vuurwerke in openbare plekke of binne 500 m daarvan af te vuur sonder amptelike toestemming van SAPD se Plofstofeenheid.
✅ Die SAPD, nie die munisipaliteit nie, keur alle vuurwerkverkope en -geleenthede goed. Slegs vier wettige handelaars in Mosselbaai mag ingevolge bestaande lisensies vuurwerke verkoop.
🚨 Munisipale wetstoepassing en SAPD sal inspeksies doen en onwettige vuurwerke konfiskeer. Boetes van R1 500 – R2 000 geld vir onwettige afvuur van vuurwerke.
⚠️ Moenie mariene noodfakkels vir pret afvuur nie – dit is gevaarlik, onwettig en kan tot vervolging lei. Moet ook asb nie Chinese Lanterns gebruik nie, die veld is baie droog en vlambaar.

Members of the public are reminded that - according to a recent Council resolution -the offices of the Mossel Bay Municipality will be closed on Friday, 5 December 2025 from 13:00 for the year-end closure. Offices will reopen on Monday, 8 December 2025 at 07:45.

All service requests and other calls to 044 606 5000 will be directly transferred to the after-hours call centre.

Please note that participation in the year-end function is voluntary, and all costs are covered by the officials themselves. No public funds are used for the year-end event.

𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 - 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱
Senior Manager Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management Services, Mr. Joseph Johnston, Chair of the Provincial Fire Chiefs of the Western Cape, has been certified as a Category B Authorised Person in terms of Section 13 of the Fire Brigade Services Act.

This certification grants him specific powers and functions under the Act, empowering him to perform critical duties that strengthen fire safety and emergency readiness across our province. Notably, only three Chief Fire Officers in the Western Cape have recently received this certification from Minister Anton Bredell — Mr. Johnston, alongside colleagues from the City of Cape Town and Overberg District Municipality.

This recognition underscores Mr. Johnston’s leadership, expertise, and unwavering commitment to safeguarding communities. His role as Chair of the Provincial Fire Chiefs ensures that Mossel Bay and the broader Western Cape benefit from coordinated, professional fire service leadership.

Together, these certified leaders are raising the bar for fire safety, preparedness, and resilience in our province.
