SERVICE BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY

Not all heroes wear capes; some wear uniforms and quietly hold the line while the city sleeps, wakes and rushes through its daily rhythm.

Polokwane Municipality proudly salutes its dedicated Traffic Officers Sylvia Moganedi, Nthabiseng Ngoepe, Gerhald de Waal, Kgaugelo Godfrey Mphago and Louis Mamabolo, who this morning, went far beyond the call of duty after discovering a mother in the process of giving birth beneath a bridge. In a moment where seconds mattered and humanity outweighed everything else, they did not hesitate, they did not pass by — they stepped in with urgency.

They ensured the mother and newborn were safely assisted and transported for urgent medical care. Today, both are safe, stable, and receiving care at Rethabile Clinic.

As fate would have it, this act of service arrives in a week when we reflect on Father’s Day - a fitting reminder that fatherhood is not only defined by biology, but by protection, presence and responsibility. In that moment under the bridge, these officers became guardians in the truest sense - standing in the gap, shielding life at its most vulnerable, and ensuring that a new beginning was met not with fear, but with care.

There is wisdom in the saying that a society is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable. On this day, our officers reminded us that compassion is action. They became the bridge between despair and hope, between uncertainty and safety.

Their conduct reflects the very essence of Batho Pele: putting people first, without hesitation and without condition. It is public service at its most humane and most honourable.

To Officers Moganedi, Ngoepe, de Waal, Mphago and Mamabolo - your actions speak louder than any headline. You did not just patrol the city; you protected life. And in doing so, you gave Father’s Day a deeper meaning: that true guardianship is found in those who step forward when life calls, even unexpectedly.

A healthy mother. A safe newborn. A grateful city. A job profoundly well done.
