When lion see a safari tourists on a horse is the tourist safe? Will it leave them alone?
To a lion, a man on horseback is not distinguishable as a man or a horse; instead, it is perceived as a single, unusual creature. The shape appears tall and unnatural, and the scent is a combination of horse and human, which the lion does not link to potential prey.
This unfamiliarity is primarily responsible for the tourist's safety. The lion perceives this new shape but fails to recognize it as prey, as it does not resemble a zebra or a buffalo.
This is why horseback safaris are feasible. Nonetheless, safety is a delicate concept. If the tourist falls, the scenario changes - the single, unusual creature becomes two familiar entities: a man and a horse. A lion can kill a horse, and a man on the ground is defenseless. The guide's skill is what the tourist pays for, to preserve the illusion.
The lion leaves the horse alone due to the presence of the man; without the man, the horse is simply meat.
