Tinubu to commission first phase of Abuja City walk next year – Wike

As part of his third anniversary, President Bola Tinubu will next year commission the first phase of the Abuja City Walk, modelled after the classic Dubai City Walk.

Federal Capital Territory minister, Nyesom Wike disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja when he signed a significant agreement with MAG International Links Limited.

He said the company will create “City Walk Abuja,” a new urban development he described as the city’s “flagship development.”

At the event, Wike was clear that the time for land speculation in Abuja was over, insisting that only serious investors committed to strict timelines and measurable progress will be welcome.

“We are not giving out land for people to hold and speculate. This is a partnership anchored on results, not promises”, he declared.

The City Walk Abuja project which will sit on over 200 hectares in the Abuja Technology Village corridor along the Airport Road, aims to create a vibrant, mixed-use urban hub with residential, commercial, retail, hospitality, medical and institutional facilities.

Wike emphasized that the key to the project’s success is its ex*****on.

He said; “We have seen what you have done in Dubai. We have been to the site. We have reviewed the designs, approved the drawings and signed the Certificates of Occupancy. Now we want to see bulldozers and concrete, not excuses”.

The minister confirmed that the foundation work must begin by August, with the first phase scheduled for completion by May 2026, marking the third anniversary of President Tinubu’s administration.

As Protests Rage On in Kenya, Nigeria Braces for a Fresh Wave of Demonstrations.

With Kenya still in the grip of youth-led demonstrations, Nigeria is now bracing for its own wave of mass protests.

A coalition of civil society groups has announced plans for a nationwide protest on August 1st—reviving the movement to mark the anniversary of Nigeria’s deadly "Days of Rage" demonstrations.

The protest, organised by the Coalition of Concerned Nigerian Citizens, in partnership with groups like the Education Rights Campaign, Youth Rights Campaign, Movement for Fundamental Change, and Pan-African Consciousness Renaissance, is being billed as a National Day of Survival.

It aims to honour the victims of last year’s unrest, which left more than 22 people dead and over 1,200 arrested following clashes with security forces across multiple states.

Activists, including Ajala Adetunji and Deji Adeyanju, say this renewed protest is a response to persistent government failures—ranging from insecurity and poverty to high unemployment and entrenched corruption.

They’re demanding a reversal of anti-poor policies, the release of detained protesters, and justice for victims of police brutality.

Amnesty International has condemned Nigeria’s handling of past demonstrations, reporting that at least 24 protesters were killed in August 2024 when security forces allegedly used live ammunition to disperse crowds.

The Nigerian protest comes amid a broader wave of discontent sweeping the continent. In Kenya, thousands of mostly young people continue to defy the government with daily demonstrations against controversial tax hikes and governance failures—fuelled by growing frustration over inequality and political exclusion.

Across Africa, young people are increasingly rising up—demanding reforms, accountability, and a future they can believe in.

Organisers of Nigeria’s upcoming protest are urging citizens to demonstrate peacefully, warning that further government inaction risks deepening instability and widening the gap between the people and those in power.

The hashtag is once again trending across major social media platforms, signaling the return of a movement many hoped would bring lasting change.

Canal+ Acquires DStv, GOtv in $3 Billion MultiChoice Deal

French media conglomerate Canal+ has finalized a $3 billion acquisition of MultiChoice Group, gaining full control of the African broadcasting giant behind pay-TV services DStv and GOtv.

The transaction, which received conditional approval from South Africa’s Competition Tribunal on July 23, is expected to be completed by October 8, pending final regulatory steps. It marks one of the biggest media takeovers on the continent in recent years.

With the deal, Canal+ will take over MultiChoice’s 14.5 million subscribers across 50 sub-Saharan African countries, adding to its existing 8 million subscribers in 25 African markets. The merged platform will become Africa’s largest pay-TV provider, offering multilingual content in English, French, and Portuguese.

As part of the conditions for approval, Canal+ has committed to investing approximately R26 billion over the next three years in South Africa’s creative industries. This includes support for local content production, sports broadcasting, and infrastructure development.

In line with South Africa’s foreign ownership regulations, Canal+ will also establish a new company, LicenceCo, to hold MultiChoice’s broadcasting license. The entity will be majority-owned by historically disadvantaged persons and headquartered in South Africa.

Canal+ CEO Maxime Saada described the acquisition as “transformative” and a significant move toward strengthening Africa’s media ecosystem. The merger is expected to boost the distribution of local content, enhance technological innovation, and position the combined entity to better compete with global streaming services.
