Compelling Dutch research shows a connection between the distribution of retailers’ printed promotional flyers and feet in store. 📊

📉 The number of store visits per shopper declined by more than 20% in regions where flyers were stopped, while there was no change to the frequency of store visits in areas where flyer distribution continued.

📈 Promotional flyers encourage purchases of the items on special and therefore increase feet through the door as well as the frequency of consumer visits to the advertising store.

Let Spark Media design and distribute your promotional flyers for winter specials and Women’s Day promotions. ❄️ 📆

Spark Media’s recent ROOTS 8.1 survey of economically active South Africans revealed that:
🗞 64% of women actively use their local newspaper to inform their shopping, higher than
📺 TV (51%)
📱 Social media (49%)
📉 All other media ranked under 31%.

Women also found advertising in print and local news websites significantly less annoying — ranking 3rd and 4th out of all platforms.
If you want to reach South African women, do it through print.

🔄 A number of international retailers have done a U-turn on recent decisions to halt printing promotional flyers following negative impacts on sales.

Canadian retailer Loblaw reintroduced its printed flyer after reportedly recording a 2% drop 📉 in its share of consumers’ shopping trips (Retail Brew 2022).

US Giant Eagle discontinued its print store flyer in 2023, reversing course just three months later to meet ‘high demand’ (Supermarket News 2023).

Similarly, Aldi discontinued its store flyer in one region of Germany, but reversed that decision four months later (Lebensmittelzeitung 2024).

Separate analysis by research house Accurat of the Aldi decision to halt print flyers showed there was a 13% drop in store visits almost immediately after the flyers were stopped.

In 2023, when Dutch retailer Lidl, the sixth largest retailer in the world, stopped delivering its store flyers in the province of 📍Utrecht, an interesting trend emerged.

📊 Researchers from three universities assessing changes in grocery shopping behaviour following the move, noticed that households decreased their shopping trips to Lidl, naturally resulting in less in-store spending.

At the same time, these households increased their visits to and spending at competitor stores. 🛒

There was a direct correlation between the printed promotional flyers and store frequency (and therefore retail brand loyalty).

Growing bodies of research indicate that print ads 📰 are still a vital part of the advertising mix, especially for retailers.

📉Recent European research, for example, showed that removing printed retail catalogues had a detrimental impact on consumer store visits.

The research team concluded that when discount retailers stopped distributing printed flyers advertising promotions, households changed their shopping behaviour and even took their shopping to competitor stores. 🏪

Its findings also suggested that 📲 digital flyers were no substitute for print flyers.
