My Story: Why I Became a Labour Rights Warrior for South African Workers

Greetings, brothers and sisters.
My name is Thulasizwe Nkabinde, and I want to share with you a true and painful story — my story. It’s a journey of hardship, injustice, and awakening. It is the reason I have dedicated my life to defending the rights of workers in South Africa.

When I was still in school, I believed the world outside was full of freedom and opportunity. I took subjects like Accounting, Economics, and Business Studies because I was motivated to become an entrepreneur — someone who would build and create. I thought life after school would be simple: get a job, earn money, build a future.

But that dream was short-lived.

Just a month after finishing matric, I started doing part-time jobs. I thought I was just clearing my head before starting my business journey — but instead, I was exposed to the dark side of working life in South Africa. What I witnessed left me deeply traumatised and forever changed.

The Reality of Work: Pain and Exploitation
One of my first experiences shocked me to the core:
At a food production company, workers didn’t even know what time they would knock off. They were working unpaid overtime daily. One of the employees accidentally cut off his fingers while operating a meat-cutting machine. He was hospitalised for months. When he returned, the company refused to reinstate him — and even worse, they denied him his rightful compensation.

That moment broke something in me. I couldn't understand how people could be so heartless. These employers didn’t care about their workers — not their pain, their families, or their future. And sadly, this wasn’t an isolated incident. From one job to another, I saw exploitation, injustice, and cruelty across many workplaces. Workers being overworked and underpaid. Long-term employees not being registered for UIF. Pension funds disappearing. Injured workers thrown away like trash.

The Turning Point: From Witness to Warrior
The worst part? I knew all of it was wrong, but I didn’t know how to fight back. I felt powerless.

That’s when I decided to study Labour Law. I wanted to understand the rights of workers and the responsibilities of employers. What I discovered was shocking: South African labour laws are strong — but most workers don’t know them, and many are too scared to enforce them because they fear being targeted, punished, or fired.

It was then I made my vow:
I will dedicate my life to fighting for the labour freedom of workers in South Africa.

That is why I founded the National Fuel & Retail Workers Union (NFRWU) — a union built from the ground up to protect workers in the most exploited industries. If you are a worker — petrol attendant, cashier, cleaner, packer, or merchandiser — you are welcome to join. Together, we rise!

But I also understand that not everyone is ready for union membership. That’s why I created The Spear of Workers, a platform for labour education and legal advice. Through it, we help employees fight unfair labour practices the legal way — not with emotions or anger, but with knowledge and the law on our side.
