A rainy Sunday lunch at David’s Bistro 🍴

We first spotted this little hidden gem while cycling along Robertsvlei Road and knew we had to come back.

I had the Tuscan chicken with crispy polenta cakes (I would go back JUST for the polenta cakes!) 🤌 Christopher had the African lamb curry and Anneke had the pork neck - everything was so full of flavour! A bottle of GlenWood Shiraz helped warm us up too 🍷

David’s Bistro only opened at La Roche Estate earlier this year. It’s relaxed, family- and pet-friendly, with beautiful mountain views and plenty of outdoor space for sunnier days.

Definitely worth adding to your Franschhoek list!

Barolo & Barbaresco by bike 🚴‍♀️🇮🇹

One of the highlights of our Italian adventure.

After spending a day cycling from Alba to Barbaresco, I enjoyed it so much that we rented bikes again the next day to explore Barolo.

Two days of rolling hills, incredible wine country, and views that looked too perfect to be real.

Christopher tackled the hills on a normal bike. I tackled them with enthusiasm - and a little help of a battery ⚡️😜

Florence / Firenze 🇮🇹🍝

Our final stop in Italy.

Florence is every bit as beautiful as people say it is. It was my second visit, but I loved experiencing it again through Christopher’s eyes as it was his first time here.

If we’re honest, Florence was a little busier than we usually like. But once we ventured beyond the busiest streets, we discovered hidden viewpoints and local restaurants.

Between sunset walks along the Arno, endless plates of pasta and pizza, breathtaking views over the city, and a few unexpected discoveries, Florence turned out to be the perfect way to end our Italian adventure.

I’ll share our favourite non-touristy spots for anyone planning a visit. 🇮🇹

What was supposed to be two nights in Alba somehow turned into an entire week - and we still didn’t want to leave 😍

There was something about life there that felt so easy and peaceful. No crowds, no rushing, long mornings, aperitivos that turned into entire evenings, and days spent wandering between cafés, wine bars, and little local shops.

Home of truffles, Nutella, Ferrero Rocher, and endless hazelnuts… with Barolo and Barbaresco just around the corner - we were completely in heaven. 🍷🚴‍♀️🍫

We found the most amazing apartment in the center of town and loved cooking with ingredients from the local markets, bike through the countryside, and take the Vespa everywhere. Of course we found our favourite aperitivo spots, made new friends, and started talking about “next time” before we had even left!

Certain places stay with you long after you go home. Alba will always be one of ours ❤️🇮🇹

Somewhere between the mountain roads, lakeside sunsets, tiny alleyways, pedal boat rides around Isola San Giulio, pizza dinners, and glasses of Nebbiolo, Arneis… we realized slowing down might be our favorite part of Italy!

Our first two nights were spent in Orta San Giulio - a quiet little lake town that feels frozen in time. We spent our days wandering through cobblestone streets, circling the island by pedal boat, and watching the lake change colors as the sun disappeared behind the mountains.

21 hours of travelling, a walk through the little cobbled streets of Orta San Giulio, and eventually finding a hidden taverna 🇮🇹

Our first dinner in Italy was everything we hoped it would be - homemade pasta, vino in carafa (Barbera and Cortese) and the best panna cotta I have ever tasted.

The perfect start to our honeymoon ❤️

Cold and raining outside, but inside it felt like summer ☀️

We were at Summer House Eatery in Glencairn on Sunday celebrating my uncle’s birthday.

Set within the newly opened Tintswalo Summer House, the space has a real sense of character — layered, a little nostalgic, and full of warmth.

The interiors are rich in detail and history, with just enough personality to keep things interesting.

We started with mussels for the table and sourdough flatbread - simple, and exactly what you want to share.

For mains, the fire-cooked lamb rump and a Cape Malay-style chicken with curried yoghurt and tender stem broccoli stood out.

The menu is ingredient-led: seasonal, local, with a subtle coastal influence.

With a bottle of Kottabos Grenache Syrah and Luddite Saboteur on the table, we let the afternoon unfold.

After lunch, we moved to the fireplace for dessert and coffee. The baklava pannekoek with anise, MCC-poached nectarines and vanilla ice cream was a highlight.

Well worth a long lunch!

A birthday I’ll never forget ✨

Christopher planned everything - all I knew was that we were going away for the night and had an event to attend (he was kind enough to give me the dress code 😜)

As we drove past Somerset West and into Elgin, I had a feeling… Hermanus.

And then I saw it - Bosman Vineyards.

He had surprised me with tickets to their Summer Soirée.

We were welcomed with pét-nat poured by winemaker Corlea Fourie, before moving into the fynbos for a tasting experience.

Canapés made their way through the crowd:
braai broodjies, pork belly skewers, squid parcels, and ceviche in lettuce wraps.

Standouts for me: the Optenhorst Chenin, the Pinot Noir from the mid-vineyards, and the Twyfeling Cinsaut.

As the sun set and the moon rose, we moved to long tables set under the trees: candlelight, soft string lights, and that quiet kind of magic.

The Bosman family - now in their 8th generation - were there to host the evening, which made it feel even more personal.

A three-course dinner followed, along with the most thoughtful birthday surprise… a bouquet of the most beautiful proteas.

It felt like something out of a storybook.
