Bookstorm is a boutique book publishing company offering focused experience and innovation in the creation of books for the South African market. Bookstorm partners with PanMacmillan who provide sales and marketing expertise and r

esources to the company – many of our projects are produced as co-publications. We publish books for the general reading public in South Africa – books that will have a market in South African bookshops. Our focus is currently on non-fiction books for adult readers. Trade publishing is something that gets under your skin – there is nothing to beat the thrill of developing ideas with authors and seeing them grow into something more than either of you could have come up with on your own. At Bookstorm we will develop these synergies to bring fresh ideas and new voices to South African bookshelves.

• The book discusses the unique challenges men face, such as societal expectations, masculinity norms and emotional suppression.
• It addresses the stigma surrounding men’s mental health and encourages open conversations with health professionals and loved ones.
• Features case studies with well-known SA men including: Chad le Clos, Swys de Bruin, Thabo Xaba, David Kramer, Robbi Kempson and many others from all walks of life.
• Veteran journalist Marion Scher has written in a straightforward, no-nonsense style that will resonate with men from all backgrounds.
• Marion Scher is a well-known SA mental health journalist and has done pro bono work for SADAG for over 30 years.

Please join Bookstorm and Exclusive Books for the launch of Men & Mental Health - Shattering the Silence. Marion Scher will be in conversation with Jeremy Maggs at Exclusive Melrose Arch on the 14th May 2025.

"One night I remember
thinking, I’m not good here. Maybe if I just slipped away, it would
actually be okay, it would probably be easier."
When you read these words, your first thoughts might be,
‘Shame, this is probably a guy whose life is a mess, can’t get a job
maybe or has relationship issues.’ You couldn’t be more wrong.
This heartrending statement came from the lips of one of South
Africa’s most successful sportsmen, multi-Olympic medalist
swimmer Chad le Clos.

Men & Mental Health – Shattering the Silence.
We are losing far too many men—both young and old—to su***de because they feel lost, isolated, and ashamed to speak about their mental health struggles.
This book explores the unique challenges men face, from societal expectations and masculinity norms to the emotional suppression that often prevents them from seeking help. It tackles the stigma surrounding men’s mental health and encourages open, honest conversations with loved ones and professionals.
What makes this book especially powerful is its collection of real-life stories from well-known South African men, including Chad le Clos, Swys de Bruin, Thabo Xaba, David Kramer, Robbi Kempson, Sbu Nkosi among many others. Their experiences offer relatability and hope to men from all walks of life.
Written by veteran journalist Marion Scher—who has dedicated over 30 years of pro-bono work to SADAG—this book is a response to the growing crisis of men suffering in silence.
