Former prosecutor appears in court over Klerksdorp crash that killed four young friends
A former state prosecutor appeared in the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court this week in connection with a motor vehicle accident that claimed the lives of four young people from Klerksdorp in October 2024.
The accused, a 34-year-old man, faces four counts of culpable homicide. This was his first appearance in the local traffic court, more than a year after the crash, a delay that families of the victims say has deepened their pain.
The tragedy occurred on Sunday evening, 13 October 2024, shortly before 19:00, as the group was travelling home from the Matlosana Mall. According to police, their vehicle was turning right at the intersection near the N12 and Platan when it was struck by a Mercedes-Benz that allegedly ran a red traffic light.
The four victims were identified as:
Ruan Esterhuizen (21)
Jackie Willis (21)
Max Knott-Craig (22)
Jané Janse van Rensburg (19)
All four were described by their families as young people with strong friendships, close family bonds and clear dreams for the future.
There was public outrage after initial police statements indicated that the Mercedes-Benz driver had fled the scene. He later presented himself at the Klerksdorp police station two days after the crash. His identity was only made public during this court appearance.
Court proceedings were postponed to 28 January to allow the state to provide the docket to the defence. It was confirmed in court that the police investigation has been completed. According to information presented, the accused is no longer employed as a prosecutor, though this has not been officially clarified.
Family members of the victims attended court, describing the appearance as emotionally overwhelming. Parents spoke of shock, grief and frustration, with some questioning the appropriateness of the accused taking photos outside court while the families continue to mourn their children.
The case has left a lasting mark on the Klerksdorp community, where the four young friends are remembered for their kindness, energy and the futures they never had the chance to live.
This matter remains before the courts.
