In a heartfelt tribute to Nelson Mandela’s enduring legacy, Emalahleni FM today participated in the 67 Minutes of Mandela Day by giving back to the community alongside Spar and Witbank's Miss Teen finalist Amogelang Madinane.

The outreach took place at the Poly Clinic in Lynnville where patients; many of whom spend long hours waiting for medical assistance were offered warm soup, fresh bread, and cake. The gesture brought comfort and nourishment to those present, reflecting the values of compassion and service that Mandela Day represents.

Spar sponsored the cake, while Miss Teen Finalisy contributed generous quantities of bread. Emalahleni FM helped facilitate the distribution, ensuring a smooth and dignified experience for all recipients. In addition to their hands-on support, the station also donated clothing items, extending warmth and dignity to those in need.

The initiative highlighted the power of collective goodwill and the importance of small acts of kindness in spaces where they are most needed. In honouring Mandela’s call to serve, the day stood as a reminder of the spirit of Ubuntu — that humanity is bound together by shared responsibility and care.

Through initiatives like this, Emalahleni FM continues to affirm its role as a community driven broadcaster committed to uplifting lives beyond the airwaves.

SAPS CALLS COLOUREDS AND INDIANS TO THE FRONTLINE IN A BOLD PUSH FOR POLICE DIVERSITY

In a bold push to address employment equity and boost racial representation, the South African Police Service in Witbank is calling on young Coloured and Indian residents from Schoongezicht and Pine Ridge to step forward and serve.

According to SAPS Witbank Communications Officer, Sergeant David Ratau, the initiative seeks to improve diversity within the police ranks by actively encouraging applications from these communities. Successful candidates will undergo formal training before being deployed to serve in local communities.

The recruitment drive forms part of SAPS’s broader transformation strategy, aimed at building a police force that better reflects South Africa’s demographics. It is open to individuals aged 18 to 35 who hold a Matric certificate.

An official registration and briefing session will be held on Friday, 18 July 2025, at 9:00 AM at the Faith Mission Church in Schoongezicht, commonly known as Overliner. Sergeant Ratau has extended a public invitation to all eligible residents to attend and participate in this initiative.

MAYOR FINALLY SETS FOOT IN KRIEL AS LONG AWAITED SERVICES GETS RESUSCITATED :

The municipal crisis in Kriel has come to an end following a tense standoff between residents and Emalahleni Municipality officials. Significant progress was made on Friday (11 July 2025) when the Letsema service delivery initiative addressed one of the community's major concerns by repairing local roads.

On Monday (14 July 2025), a key demand was met as the mayor engaged directly with residents in a long-awaited in-person meeting. Adding to the list of wins for the community, a new fire truck has officially been delivered to Kriel; substantially strengthening the town’s fire and emergency response capabilities.

These developments signal the resolution of the protest they had and a return to normalcy. The mayor’s visit, coupled with the swift delivery of essential services, marks a decisive shift and highlights the effectiveness of community-driven activism in holding local government accountable.

US SLAPS 30% TARIFFS ON SOUTH AFRICAN EXPORTS

Emalahleni-based independent economist Mr Jabu Rakwena believes that the 30% tariff imposed by the United States on South African exports will likely be felt across sectors, eventually affecting the general economy and unemployment. Around 50% of South African exports will face tariffs that will make them uncompetitive.

This comes after US President Donald Trump sent a letter to several countries including South Africa on Monday, informing them about the 30% tariff expected to come into effect on the 1st of August and Jabu Rakwena says South African trade negotiators still have time to negotiate a better tariff deal, which could avert the situation and most likely companies have ramped up supplies before August.

Rakwena says tariff increase could lead to potential job losses, mainly in the agricultural sector, where $14 billion of agricultural exports to the US are under threat and the South African citrus industry as a significant employer, providing 35 000 jobs.

He says the biggest risk out of tariffs increase is that South Africa can capitulate and start doing away with empowerment programmes of the country, privatise key factors of the economy due to pressure from within the DA-lead faction of the GNU that is pro-US and pro-markets.
