As South Africa observes National Savings Month this July, many families on the Cape Flats say that saving is simply not an option. With the cost of food, transport, and electricity continuing to rise while wages remain stagnant, residents have indicated that their financial focus is purely on day-to-day survival.

A VOC News poll found that nearly 50% of respondents are unable to save, living from paycheck to paycheck.

As the Israeli brutality in Palestine continues, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has painted a grim picture of life in Gaza, with its chief, Philippe Lazzarini, describing residents as “walking corpses.”

“People in Gaza are neither dead nor alive—they are walking corpses.”

At least 113 people have died from hunger, including 45 in the last four days alone.

Lazzarini said that more than 6,000 truckloads of food and medical supplies are currently stuck in Jordan and Egypt, awaiting access. He has called on Israel to allow the unrestricted and uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian aid to prevent further loss of life.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has raised alarm over the high number of child drownings globally, marking World Drowning Prevention Day by calling for urgent action and greater awareness. The institute said that drowning remains one of the leading causes of death among children, with more than 236,000 lives lost each year.

NSRI spokesperson Andrew Ingram stated that their water safety initiatives have already reached over five million people.

"The NSRI urges all South Africans to learn basic water safety, supervise children when they are in or near water, and share stories that inspire others to stay safe. Wear blue on Drowning Prevention Day, share your story on social media, and help us prevent drowning. Remember, anyone can drown, but no one should," he urged.
