Ashton and Montagu fire:
The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s (CWDM) Fire Services said this morning that the fire in the Kogmanskloof area above Ashton and Montagu is still burning. CWDM Fire Services and CapeNature teams are working for the third day to quell the flames.

The fire continues to burn in a broken line along the mountain tops, occasionally moving into more accessible areas.

Fire vehicles and crews from the CWDM’s Worcester and Ceres stations remain on standby for property protection, should this become necessary. Teams are being assisted by the Winelands FPA to ensure consistent communication with landowners.

According to CWDM, CapeNature teams will deploy additional resources to re-establish firebreaks in the affected area.

A warm day with light winds is forecast, although temperatures on the mountain tops remain cool, these are sure to heat up during the day, providing uncomfortable firefighting conditions.

Update on the fire in Ashton and Montagu: Teams from the Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM), together with their partners CapeNature and the Winelands Fire Protection Association (FPA), are still battling the blaze in the mountains.

According to an update at 16.30 today fire crews are making slow but steady progress in containing the firelines. An active line remains above Zolani, with no current risk to infrastructure.

On the northern (Montagu) side of the mountain, the line also remains active and is being managed by CapeNature crews. The dense vegetation causes heavy smoke. There is some concern that a change in wind direction could drive the fire toward nearby farmland. Fire trucks are on standby to provide property protection if required.
Resources on scene include vehicles and crew from CapeNature and the CWDM, with further support from the FPA.
