ZAMBIA COMPLETES UNESCO BACKED PROJECT TO SAFEGUARD TONGA KUYABILA POETRY
The Ministry of Tourism and the Zambia National Commission for UNESCO have successfully completed the project to safeguard Kuyabila, the traditional poetry of the Tonga people of Southern Province. Kuyabila serves as a medium for transmitting oral history, knowledge, and cultural identity through drums.
The four-year project, supported by UNESCO through an International Assistance fund of US$83,790, began in 2021 and focused on raising awareness of the Convention on the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. This was achieved through community meetings, local media engagement, and collaboration with traditional leaders.
As part of capacity-building efforts, 42 stakeholders were trained in community-based inventorying, enhancing understanding and ownership of safeguarding practices within the communities.
Speaking at the ongoing 20th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in New Delhi, Ministry of Tourism Chief Cultural and Folklore Officer, Mr. Thomas Mambo Mubita, expressed gratitude to UNESCO for its support in safeguarding Kuyabila in Monze and Namwala districts to strengthen its viability.
Mr. Mubita highlighted that a major achievement of the project was the documentation of Kuyabila. This included the recording of 40 poems, the publication of a book, and the production of a video documentary capturing performances, interviews, and safeguarding experiences. An inventory covering key themes such as marriage, initiation, funerals, farming, health, and education was also completed.
He further stated that the project also facilitated the integration of Kuyabila into education and cultural activities. Communities reported renewed pride and motivation to practise and transmit Kuyabila, accompanied by increasing recognition in cultural events and interest from education and media institutions.
This is according to a statement issued by Naomi Mweemba, First Secretary Press at the Embassy of Zambia in Paris.
