GOVT BEGINS PHONE NUMBER VERIFICATION FOR FRA PAYMENTS โ€” MTOLO PHIRI

Minister of Agriculture Reuben Mtolo Phiri says the government has commenced the verification of phone numbers for farmers who supplied maize to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to facilitate payment through mobile money.

Mr. Phiri told Parliament yesterday that the verification process is aimed at speeding up the disbursement of funds to farmers who have been waiting to be paid for their maize.

The Minister further disclosed that government will consider cash transit payments in areas with poor or no mobile network coverage to ensure no farmer is disadvantaged.

Mr. Phiri was responding to Chama North Member of Parliament Yotam Mtayachalo, who raised an urgent matter without notice in Parliament, highlighting the difficulties farmers are facing as they spend money travelling to banks in an effort to access their payments.

HAMWIINGA ADVISES TRANSPORTERS ON CHIKUNI AND GWEMBE ROUTES TO REDUCE FARES OR HE INTRODUCES HIS BUSES

A businessman born in Mulongaalwiili in Ufwenuka Chiefdom, now based in Monze Town, Andron Ghumbo Hamwiinga, has advised transporters operating on the Monzeโ€“Chikuni and Monzeโ€“Gwembe routes do not reduce fares or he is ready to deploy his own buses to offer alternative cheaper services.

Mr Hamwiinga tells Chikuni Radio News that transporters on the Chikuni route have continued cite poor road conditions as the reason for high fares, despite the road having been graded.

He adds that once the road is fully tarred, he will introduce his buses on the Monzeโ€“Chikuni route if the situation does not improve.

He says his plan is aimed at reducing fares on both the Chikuni and Gwembe routes, describing current pricing as unfair for such short distances, especially with ongoing improvements to the road network.

Mr Hamwiinga notes that the current fares do not reflect the actual distances covered.

He points out that while the 100 kilometres Monzeโ€“Choma route costs K50, the much shorter 28 kilometres Monzeโ€“Chikuni trip is priced at K55.

He announces that his buses will charge K30 for the Monzeโ€“Chikuni route and K40 for the Monzeโ€“Gwembe route.

Mr Hamwiinga adds that he has already engaged other transporters who are willing to partner with him to improve mobility and ease the financial burden on commuters.

He says the move is meant to protect peopleโ€™s pockets and allow them to save money for other essential needs.

ALL AGRICULTURE CAMPS IN MONZE REPORT PEST ATTACKS IN FARMERS' FIELDS

Monze District Agriculture Coordinator (DACO) Denis Mooya has confirmed receiving reports of pest attacks on crops especially maize across all 29 agricultural camps.

Mr Mooya says that in Ufwenuka Chiefdom, preliminary findings indicate that the pest attacking fields is likely to be the maize shoot fly, a pest he describes as particularly difficult to control.

He adds that there are also reported cases of fall armyworm affecting fields planted in the second week of November.

Speaking to Chikuni Radio News, Mr Mooya revealed that out of more than 96,000 hectares of cultivated land in the district, less than 20 percent is suspected to be affected.

He further disclosed that his office has not yet received pesticides for distribution to farmers, adding that the office is compiling reports to be sent to the Provincial Agricultural Coordinating Officer (PACO)

He urged farmers to immediately report any pest cases to camp officers and advised those on the FISP programme to ensure they purchase pesticides.

Earlier Chief Ufwenukaโ€™s representative in Monze District, Kizito Hamuchenkwa, had called on the DACO's office and camp officers to urgently respond to the suspected armyworm outbreak in the chiefdom.

ZAMBIA COMPLETES UNESCO BACKED PROJECT TO SAFEGUARD TONGA KUYABILA POETRY

The Ministry of Tourism and the Zambia National Commission for UNESCO have successfully completed the project to safeguard Kuyabila, the traditional poetry of the Tonga people of Southern Province. Kuyabila serves as a medium for transmitting oral history, knowledge, and cultural identity through drums.

The four-year project, supported by UNESCO through an International Assistance fund of US$83,790, began in 2021 and focused on raising awareness of the Convention on the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. This was achieved through community meetings, local media engagement, and collaboration with traditional leaders.

As part of capacity-building efforts, 42 stakeholders were trained in community-based inventorying, enhancing understanding and ownership of safeguarding practices within the communities.

Speaking at the ongoing 20th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in New Delhi, Ministry of Tourism Chief Cultural and Folklore Officer, Mr. Thomas Mambo Mubita, expressed gratitude to UNESCO for its support in safeguarding Kuyabila in Monze and Namwala districts to strengthen its viability.

Mr. Mubita highlighted that a major achievement of the project was the documentation of Kuyabila. This included the recording of 40 poems, the publication of a book, and the production of a video documentary capturing performances, interviews, and safeguarding experiences. An inventory covering key themes such as marriage, initiation, funerals, farming, health, and education was also completed.

He further stated that the project also facilitated the integration of Kuyabila into education and cultural activities. Communities reported renewed pride and motivation to practise and transmit Kuyabila, accompanied by increasing recognition in cultural events and interest from education and media institutions.

This is according to a statement issued by Naomi Mweemba, First Secretary Press at the Embassy of Zambia in Paris.

CHIEF NYANGULWE CRITICISES PF FOR PLAYING POLITICS BEFORE BURIAL OF ECL

Chief Nyangulwe of the Nsenga people has strongly criticised the Patriotic Front (PF) for what he described as uncultural and unZambian conduct in pushing to replace the late former President Edgar Lungu before his burial.

The traditional leader said the funeral has been turned into a political battleground instead of a moment of dignity, unity and respect.

The Chief reminded the nation that President Lungu himself only became elected after President Michael Sataโ€™s burial, saying, โ€œhe was left to act when President Sata became unwell, and when Sata died, that is when Edgar Lungu took over. A funeral must be respected. That is our culture.โ€

Senior Chief Nyangulwe questioned why, six months after his death, the late President has still not been buried, attributing the delay to PFโ€™s partisan interests.

The Chief further raised concerns about the whereabouts of the former Presidentโ€™s remains, asking whether the body is still in a South African mortuary or being kept hidden elsewhere.

He noted that the grave at Embassy Park is already prepared and urged that the burial should proceed before any political processes resume.

And Chief Nyangulwe appealed to the New Dawn Administration to facilitate closure on this matter for the nation, saying prolonged delays are harmful and disrespectful.

MWAMUNGULE HAILS GOVT PLAN TO MAKE GBV OFFENSES NON-BAILABLE

Mazabuka-born and bred gender advocate Brenda Mwamungule has commended President Hakainde Hichilema and his government for their resolve to classify gender-based violence (GBV) offenses as non-bailable, describing the move as a major step toward safeguarding human rights for all.

Ms. Mwamungule said the planned legal reforms will serve as a strong deterrent, noting that the increasing number of GBV cases reported daily calls for tougher measures.

She urged law enforcement agencies to fully align their operations with governmentโ€™s intentions to ensure that the prevalence of GBV significantly reduces across communities.

Ms. Mwamungule emphasized that ending GBV must be treated as a national priority, stressing that both men and women deserve equal protection from all forms of abuse.

She further assured citizens that President Hichilemaโ€™s administration remains committed to advancing human rights through the implementation of sound policies aimed at strengthening the fight against gender-based violence.
