MORGAN MUUNDA DONATES K40 000 TOWARDS ZAMBANGULWE TRADITIONAL CEREMONY

Lusaka based businessman Morgan Muunda has praised President Hakainde Hichilema for introducing free education and increasing the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) from K1.6 million to K36.1 million.

Mr Muunda also lauded the government for constructing classroom blocks under the CDF, providing desks, initiating the construction of about 415 new technical secondary schools, and the large scale deployment of civil servants across the country.

He said the President deserves commendation for these significant development initiatives that are positively impacting communities.

Speaking during the Zambangulwe Traditional Ceremony dinner dance of Chief Chipepo yesterday in Lusaka, Mr Muunda encouraged youths to take full advantage of the youth empowerment funds provided by the UPND government.

He further appealed to members of the public to contribute what they can to ensure the success of the traditional ceremony.

Mr Muunda also urged people to attend in large numbers to support this year's Zambangulwe Traditional Ceremony to take place from 05 to 06 September 2025 in Chirundu.

As part of his commitment, he donated K40,000 towards the event.

POLICE OFFICER SHOOTS DEAD WIFE AND BROTHER IN-LAW BEFORE TAKING OWN LIFE

August 01,2025-The Zambia Police Service would like to confirm a tragic incident of murder and su***de that occurred today, August 01,2025, at around 05:30 hours in the Low Density Area of Solwezi District, and was reported to Solwezi Central Police Station at 09:21 hours by F/Kalumbu Agnes, aged 45, of the same residence.

According to the report, F/Womba Samulozela, aged 41, and her stepbrother M/Wanna Samulozela, aged 42, were fatally shot by M/Funkuta Muyembi, aged 46, a Police Officer stationed at Solwezi Central Police Station, who was also the husband to the deceased Womba Samulozela. The incident is believed to have stemmed from an ongoing marital dispute.

Police officers promptly responded to the scene and discovered all three deceased persons in the same room. The bodies of the two victims were found lying on the floor, while the body of the shooter lay partially on the bed.

Detailed observations at the scene revealed the following:

F/Womba Samulozela sustained a gunshot wound on the left side of the ribs, with an exit wound on her back.
M/Wanna Samulozela was shot on the left side of the ribs; however, no exit wound was observed.
M/Funkuta Muyembi, the officer, sustained a gunshot wound to the right side of the neck, with an exit wound at the back of the head. An AK-47 rifle, serial number 1674, was found clamped on his chest with the safety catch open, one round in the chamber, and two rounds remaining in the magazine.
The firearm was a police-issued weapon drawn by the officer earlier that morning at 05:05 hours, as recorded in the Occurrence Book at the Inquiries Office. Officer Muyembi had indicated that he was following up on a report at Mutanda.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the officer gained entry into the house using a spare key and proceeded to shoot his wife and her stepbrother before taking his own life. It has also been established that the couple had separated on July 30,2025 following a series of marital disputes.

The late M/Wanna Samulozela has been identified as a medical doctor stationed at Solwezi Provincial Health Office, recently transferred from Lusaka. He had been residing with the couple at the time of the incident.

Police have since instituted a full scale investigation into the matter. All three bodies have been transported to Solwezi General Hospital mortuary where they await postmortem examinations and subsequent burial.

This unfortunate incident highlights the importance of addressing domestic disputes through peaceful and lawful means. The Zambia Police Service deeply regrets the loss of life and extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

ZAMBIANS STILL STRUGGLING WITH HIGH COST OF LIVING DESPITE DROP IN BASIC NEEDS BASKET - JCTR

The Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR) has expressed concern that many Zambian households continue to face a heavy financial burden despite a slight reduction in the cost of living for July 2025.

The Centre attributes this to high food prices, insecure incomes and limited access to social protection which continue to undermine household resilience.

The July 2025 BNNB for a family of five in Lusaka was recorded at K11,602.37 down from K11,763.38 in June, showing a K160.96 reduction attributed to price reductions in a few essential food and non-food items.

According to Ms. Lukwesa Musonda, Social & Economic Development Programme Officer at JCTR, inflationary pressures persist on other key food items such as Kapenta.

Ms. Musonda has since called for accelerated agricultural mechanisation and value addition for smallholder farmers and invest in irrigation, storage and extension services to promote agro processing and value chains to boost rural incomes and reduce food import dependence.

She further calls for support of the informal sector to access affordable credit, business formalisation and skills training especially for women and youth to enhance livelihoods and stimulate local demand.

Ms. Musonda has also urged policymakers, development partners and civil society to remain vigilant and collaborative in building an inclusive economy.

NCC FUMES OVER SIMWANDA BRIDGE POOR WORKMANSHIP

The National Council for Construction (NCC) has expressed deep concern over the poor workmanship on the Simwanda Bridge project in Kalomo District, in Southern Province.

The bridge being constructed under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) at a cost of over K800,000 has been condemned by the NCC after an on-site inspection.

NCC Executive Director Paul Makasa who led the inspection together with the board chairperson, said the Council was saddened by the loss of significant public resources on a project that does not meet minimum engineering standards.

“As NCC, we are deeply saddened that over K800,000 of taxpayer money has been lost on a poorly executed project that is not fit for its purpose. This bridge will need to be demolished and a new one built from scratch if it is to serve the community safely,” he said.

Professor Makasa was speaking in an interview with ZANIS at the Kalomo town council after the bridge inspection visit.

He said following the findings after the inspection, NCC has summoned Manjenja construction firm, the contractor responsible for the project.

And NCC Board Director Edgar Siakachona said the findings at Simwanda Bridge raise broader concerns about the competencies of the local contractors and local authority’s supervision of CDF-funded infrastructure.

GOVT DISTRIBUTES OVER 2M ANIMAL VACCINES UNDER 2025 NATIONAL LIVESTOCK VACCINATION PROGRAMME

Government has distributed over 2 million animal vaccines doses across the country in disease prone areas as part of its commitment to ensuring effective animal disease prevention and control.

The development has been revealed in a press statement released today by Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Principal Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Benny Munyama.

Here are the highlights:

✅The Ministry through the Department of Veterinary Services, has distributed a total of 2,039,450 animal vaccine doses across disease-prone regions, under the 2025 National Livestock Vaccination Programme.

✅The animal vaccines for diseases include 1,288,450 doses for Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), 670,000 doses for Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP), and 81,000 doses for Anthrax.

✅Southern Province received 823,450 FMD vaccines; Central Province received 405,000 doses, while Western and Eastern Provinces received 50,000 and 10,000 doses, respectively.

✅For CBPP, Western Province received 579,000, North-Western 58,000; Northern Province 23,000; and Muchinga Province got 10,000 doses.

✅The entire 81,000 Anthrax vaccine doses were distributed within Western Province.

✅This vaccine distribution and onward animal vaccination will help control disease outbreaks and contribute to Zambia’s plan to increase the national cattle population from the current 5.1 million to over 7.4 million by 2027.

✅The vaccine distribution also supports the Government’s ambitious plan to initiate the US$1 billion annual beef exports beginning this year, 2025.

✅And Mr. Munyama highlighted the crucial role animal vaccines play in preventing, controlling, and managing diseases that significantly impact national health and economies.

✅The routine vaccinations under the national programme will help build herd immunity, reduce livestock mortality, and improve overall production and productivity in the Livestock sub-sector.

✅The animal vaccinations will only be conducted in high-risk areas where FMD CBPP and Anthrax are prevalent.

✅Livestock farmers are urged to fully co-operate with veterinary officers in the implementation of the vaccination programme in order to prevent animal disease outbreaks.

✅Government remains committed to working closely with farming communities and all stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the National Livestock Vaccination Programme.
