ADEG CONCERNED OVER ECZ'S DIRECTIVE ON USE OF CANDLE LIGHT SYMBOL

BY GLORIA SHAWA

The Advocates for Democratic Governance Foundation, ADEG, has expressed concern over the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s directive requiring independent candidates to withdraw the use of the candle symbol.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia ECZ has instructed independent Candidates to stop using the symbol on grounds that it is similar to that of another registered political party.

And ADEG Executive Director Gideon Musonda said while his Organization appreciates the need to protect the integrity of electoral symbols and avoid voter confusion, electoral processes must also uphold principles of procedural fairness, consistency and predictability.

Mr Musonda argued that due diligence should have been done during the symbol approval process, including verifying against existing records of registered political parties before assigning symbols to independent candidates.

He said correcting administrative oversights at the expense of candidates who have already printed campaign materials and mobilized supporters raises legitimate concerns about fairness and electoral credibility.

Mr Musonda added that the directive, issued during an active campaign period, risks creating uncertainty and may undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

He further stated that if the Commission’s argument is based on perceived similarity rather than actual duplication, and if the concerned political party is not participating in the forthcoming elections, ECZ should reconsider and rescind the directive.

Konkola Copper Mines Plc has commenced a planned 60-day shutdown of the Nchanga Smelter as part of a comprehensive maintenance and repair programme.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Malcolm Mewett said the maintenance works form part of the company’s broader rebuilding and modernisation strategy.

Mr Meweet said the shutdown, which began recently, is aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, reliability and long-term production performance.
