TIZ CONCERNED OVER IRREGULARITIES IN THE PROCUREMENT PROCESS OF BIOMETRIC VOTER REGISTRATION EQUIPMENT FOR THE 2026 GENERAL ELECTION

BY GLORIA SHAWA

Transparency International Zambia (TI-Z) has raised concerns over irregularities in the procurement process for Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) equipment and software for the 2026 General Elections.

TI-Z Executive Director Maurice Nyambe says two companies, Miru Systems and Starlab, have advanced to the final stage of the tender under questionable circumstances, despite one of the companies failing to meet basic eligibility requirements.

He has told RISE FM NEWS in a statement that investigations by TI-Z revealed that the Zambia Public Procurement Authority (ZPPA) upheld the appeal of a disqualified bidder, while stronger contenders were excluded.

Mr. Nyambe says Multiple whistleblowers have come forward with evidence suggesting internal interference by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) officials, which raises concerns about the transparency and fairness of the process.

He has emphasized that failure to address these revelations would undermine the government's commitment to fighting corruption and compromise the credibility of the electoral process.

Mr. Nyambe is now calling for the immediate Suspension of the current due diligence process pending an urgent independent review.
