Government Denies Authorizing Mining at Senseli Mine, Reaffirms Commitment to Legal and Safe Mining Practices

The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development has dismissed reports claiming that it authorized mining activities at Senseli Mine in Chingola, Copperbelt Province.

Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Hon. Paul Kabuswe, clarified that Senseli Mine remains a private operation. He said that the government is engaging with its owners to ensure all activities are formalized in accordance with mining regulations.

Mr. Kabuswe reiterated the government’s dedication to promoting safe and lawful mining practices. He noted that security agencies are collaborating closely to ensure an orderly regularization process.

“The government does not condone illegal mining,” Hon. Kabuswe stated. “We are in discussions with the owners of Senseli Mine to formalize their operations, guaranteeing compliance with safety and legal standards.”

The Minister further explained that Chingola Member of Parliament, Hon. Chipoka Mulenga, visited the mine over the weekend—not to endorse unauthorized mining, but to advise miners on the importance of operating within the law.

In a related development, Hon. Kabuswe confirmed that all illegal miners at KCM’s Nchanga Mine were instructed to vacate the premises last Saturday, underscoring the government’s zero-tolerance policy toward unlawful mining. Security personnel have been deployed to the area to restore order.

The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development remains steadfast in fostering a well-regulated mining sector that prioritizes safety, environmental protection, and sustainable development.

For Immediate Release

On behalf of the Lungu family, we wish to announce that the funeral and burial of our beloved Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu will take place here in South Africa, in accordance with the family’s wishes for a private ceremony.

This period has been deeply emotional for family, and we are grateful for the overwhelming support and condolences extended to the family from across the continent and the globe.

We would especially like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Government of the Republic of South Africa for their respectful support and for honouring the family’s decision to hold a private funeral and burial here in South Africa.

Your non-interference and respect of the South African Constitution and rights of the family and the desire of the family is commendable and will give space to mourn and celebrate the life of our loved Edgar Chagwa Lungu in dignity and peace.

The visit of the Honourabke Minister for International Relations, Mr Ronald Lamola, was heartwarming when he came to convey a message of condolences on behalf of President Cyril Ramaposa.

The Lungu family continues to seek peace and unity amongst fellow Zambians during this time and thanks all friends, supporters, and members of the public for their understanding, compassion and willingness to mourn the former head of state who, as it has been resolved by the family, will be buried here in Johannesburg South Africa at a private funeral.

ZCSA SEIZES OVER 200 CRATES OF EXPIRED MOSI LIGHT BEER IN NDOLA

BY GLORIA SHAWA

The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has seized 282 crates of expired Mosi Light beer from a named distributor in Ndola, valued at K78, 960.00.

This was after a tip-off from a whistle blower in Ndola’s Pamodzi Township on the sale of expired clear beer contrary to the provisions of the Zambian Standard - ZS 430: Clear Beer Specification and the Compulsory Standards Act No. 3 of 2017.

ZCSA Public Relations Manager Brisn Hatyoka days the Agency has since restricted the products pending disposal, in a bid to protect consumers, as provided for by the Compulsory Standards Act.

Mr Hatyoka had since warned of punitive actions against entities supplying non-compliant products on the market as such products pose a risk to public health and safety.

He has also urged the public to be vigilant and inform ZCSA upon encountering any suspicious products covered by compulsory standards to the nearest ZCSA office.

And Mr Hatyoka says the Agency is committed to enforcing compulsory standards in a bid to protect the health and safety of consumers.

He adds that the Agency has enhanced its enforcement, public education and stakeholder engagements across the country to ensure that only safe products are traded on the Zambian market.

ILLEGAL MINING THREATENS SAFETY AT KCM'S NCHANGA MINE

Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has expressed deep concern over the growing threat posed by illegal miners who have encroached on its operational area in Chingola, carrying out unauthorized activities directly above the Nchanga Underground Mine.

This invasion poses a significant risk to the structural stability of the mine and endangers the lives of thousands of employees working underground. KCM management is urging immediate action to avert a potential disaster.

KCM Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Dr. John K***a has called for swift intervention from the relevant authorities, stating:

“Immediate and decisive action is critical to prevent a catastrophic loss of life. The safety of our workforce and environment is our highest priority, and we must act now.”

Dr K***a said Nchanga Underground Mine remains one of KCM’s most vital assets and is central to the company’s operations in Chingola, the headquarters of the Vedanta Resources-owned mining operation.

He has since appealed to law enforcement agencies and community leaders to intervene promptly in order to protect human life and preserve national mining infrastructure.
