THREE CHINGOLA MPS, MAYOR AND 29 COUNCILLORS SWORN INTO OFFICE

A new chapter in Chingola’s political and civic leadership has begun, with three newly elected Members of Parliament, the Mayor and twenty-nine councillors today being sworn into office following the 2026 General Elections.

The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Chingola District Council Chambers, brought together the newly elected leaders who are now mandated to represent their respective constituencies and wards and contribute to the development of the district.

The three MPs include Chingola Central Member of Parliament Michelle Phiri Kazala, Nchanga MP Rosemary Chipoya and Chingola West MP Chipoka Mulenga — were sworn in alongside the newly elected councillors.

The ceremony was officiated by Resident Magistrate Honourable Maybin Kapaya, who urged the civic leadership to uphold their oaths of office and serve the people with dedication, integrity and responsibility.

Magistrate Kapaya urged the newly elected leaders to work together, regardless of their political affiliations, to promote development and improve service delivery in the district.

Speaking exclusively after being sworn in, Chingola Mayor Nelius Mumba assured residents that his administration will work towards improving their living standards.

Mr. Mumba acknowledged the challenges facing the municipality and pledged to promote a good working culture at the council in order to enhance service delivery.

In her opening remarks, Chingola Town Clerk Namukolo Kalufyanya called on the newly sworn-in MPs, Mayor and councillors to put partisan politics aside and concentrate on the development needs of the people.

Mrs. Kalufyanya urged the elected leaders to provide effective political leadership and representation while exercising their oversight responsibilities within the framework of the law.

She emphasized that the election period is now over and that it is time for the elected leaders to focus on service delivery and work for the benefit of all residents, regardless of their political affiliation.

DC FAULTS MULONGA WATER OVER SHODDY WORKS

Chingola District Commissioner Howard Kamwandi has taken a swipe at Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company over what he calls shoddy works on a newly installed pipeline at the CM 513 diversion in Mushishima Settlement Area.

The pipeline, located along the Chililabombwe–Solwezi Junction in Mushishima Settlement Area, has not yet become operational after it was vandalised and parts of it stolen by suspected thieves following its installation.

Speaking when he inspected the Mushishima pipeline, Mr. Kamwandi says Mulonga Water must pull up its socks, accusing the company of failing to adequately address water challenges facing residents.

He says people in Mushishima and other parts of Chingola have continued to complain about water shortages, despite Government funding the utility.

The DC has also questioned the competence of those handling the project and raised concerns over alleged overpricing of the contract.

Meanwhile, Mulonga Water’s Chingola Division Manager, Kameta Kandenge, has acknowledged the concerns raised, saying the company will restore water supply within this month.

Ms. Kandenge has also promised to revisit plans to extend water services to affected areas.

FOUR DEAD, ONE SURVIVES IN MILENGE ILLEGAL MINING ACCIDENT

SAMFYA - Four people have died while one other has survived an illegal mining accident in Kalali Resettlement Scheme in Senior Chief Kalasamukoso’s area of Milenge District, Luapula Province.

Luapula Province Permanent Secretary Prudence Chinama-Kangwa says the five were allegedly engaged in illegal mining inside an approximately 20-metre-deep pit with tunnels when the accident occurred yesterday afternoon.

Mrs. Chinama says preliminary findings indicate that the victims may have died from suffocation caused by dangerously low oxygen levels inside the pit.

She says the miners had also taken a generator and water pump underground, further raising safety concerns.

The Permanent Secretary, who visited Samfya District Hospital, says the survivor is receiving treatment but remains disoriented and in shock.

She says experts have successfully retrieved all four bodies and confirmed that there are no other victims remaining inside the pit.

Mrs. Chinama has described the incident as tragic and avoidable, urging members of the public to stay away from illegal and unsafe mining activities.

She says Government has created an enabling environment for the formalisation of artisanal mining through the issuance of licences and provision of safety guidance.

Mrs. Chinama has therefore urged illegal miners to formalise their operations and follow established safety procedures, stressing that Government cannot continue losing lives through preventable mining accidents.

UPND RETURN DOES NOT MEAN LOAD SHEDDING IS BACK - KAMWANDI

Chingola District Commissioner Howard Kamwandi has dismissed rumours circulating in some sections of Chingola that load shedding will return following the re-election of the UPND Government.

Mr Kamwandi says Government has put measures in place to ensure that any power rationing experienced will not have the same devastating impact as in previous years.

Speaking during a media interactive meeting at his office in Chingola, Mr Kamwandi pointed to investments in solar power and regional interconnections, including the Nakonde-Zambia Tanzania Interconnector, which he says is almost complete.

Mr Kamwandi disclosed that Chingola is also earmarked for a 12-megawatt solar power plant in Chingola South, while every district is slated to have a solar plant.

He advanced that Government has also waived taxes on solar equipment as part of efforts to boost alternative energy.

The District Commissioner further said the measures are aimed at ensuring Zambia does not suffer the way it did during previous periods of low water levels at Kariba Dam.

KABUSWE PETITIONS CHILILABOMBWE PARLIAMENTARY SEAT

Former Minister of Mines and Minerals Paul Kabuswe has petitioned the Lusaka High Court to nullify the Chililabombwe parliamentary election, citing alleged irregularities, corruption, violence and character assassination.

Kabuswe, who had represented Chililabombwe since 2021 on the UPND ticket, lost to Resolute Party candidate Nsofwa Kabwe Lupele, who was declared winner after polling 10,920 votes against Kabuswe’s 8,986.

In his petition, Kabuswe alleges that Lupele and his agents distributed cash amounts ranging from K50 to K100 to voters at Ishuko Tavern polling station on election day. He further claims Lupele engaged in a campaign of character assassination, accusing him of theft, tribalism and nepotism.

Kabuswe also contends that some of his supporters were prevented from voting after rocks were placed across the road at Fikolongo in Chitambi Ward, blocking his Nissan Hardbody vehicle carrying voters to polling stations.

The matter is now before the Lusaka High Court for determination.

ROMANA MAMBO TAKES CHINGOLA MAYORAL RESULT TO COURT

Losing UPND Chingola mayoral candidate Romana Mambo has petitioned the 2026 mayoral election, challenging the victory of NRPUP candidate Nelius Mumba.

Mumba was declared winner with 36,917 votes, while Mambo polled 24,753 votes a margin of 12,164 votes.
But Mambo says the result was not the end of the matter.

In a statement issued on Saturday, she said her petition was based on alleged discrepancies and irregularities in the tabulation, collation and declaration of results.

“Every vote counts, and the will of the people must be protected,” she said.

Mambo said she was confident the courts would scrutinise the election and urged her supporters to remain peaceful and patient.

The Chingola Mayoral Election is now headed to court.
