Why Jehovah’s Witnesses Don’t Believe in Hellfire
Many religions teach that wicked people go to a fiery place called hell to suffer forever after death. But Jehovah’s Witnesses do not believe in hellfire. Why? Because the Bible does not teach that anyone burns eternally in fire.
**What Is “Hellfire”?
** The word hellfire comes from the idea of a burning place where the souls of the wicked are punished forever.
However, in the Bible, the original words translated as hell—such as Sheol (Hebrew) and Hades (Greek)—do not mean a place of torment.
They refer to the common grave of mankind, a state of nonexistence where there is no thought, pain, or suffering.
📖 Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10 – “The dead know nothing at all... There is no work nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom in the Grave.”
📖 Psalm 146:4 – “His spirit goes out, he returns to the ground; on that very day his thoughts perish.”
What Does the Bible Say About Death and Punishment?
The Bible makes it clear that the punishment for sin is death, not eternal torment.
📖 Romans 6:23 – “For the wages sin pays is death, but the gift God gives is everlasting life by Christ Jesus our Lord.”
📖 Ezekiel 18:4 – “The soul who sins is the one who will die.”
Notice, the Bible does not say “the soul who sins will burn forever.” Death means complete nonexistence — no pain, no awareness, no fire.
Why We Don’t Believe in Hellfire
Jehovah is a God of love (📖 1 John 4:8). It would go against his loving and just nature to torture people forever.
Eternal burning would be cruel and unjust, especially since the Bible says:
📖 Ezekiel 33:11 – “I take no pleasure at all in the death of the wicked, but prefer that the wicked turn back from his way and keep living.”
Jehovah’s actions have always shown compassion and justice. In ancient times, some parents sacrificed their children in fire to false gods like Molech, and Jehovah was deeply displeased with that practice.
📖 Jeremiah 7:31 – “They have built the high places of Topheth... to burn
