FORMER PRESIDENT ECL'S REMAINS ARRIVE TODAY

The remains of the Sixth Republican President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, is expected to arrive in Zambia today, Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at 14:00 hours.

The body will be flown into Kenneth Kaunda International Airport from South Africa.

Upon arrival, a Military Honours Ceremony will be conducted by the Defence Force at the Presidential Pavilion, where the late President will be accorded the respect due to his office. Attendance at the ceremony will be strictly by invitation.

The public is encouraged to follow the proceedings live on various media platforms, including ZNBC, ZANIS TV, Prime TV, Diamond TV, and other broadcasting stations.

After the ceremony, the body will proceed to lie in repose at the late President's private residence at Plot Number 56660, Chifwema Road, New Kasama.

Belvedere Lodge has been designated as the official venue for the State Funeral throughout the National Mourning period.

The body will lie in state at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre from Thursday, June 19 to Saturday, June 21, 2025, allowing the public to pay their last respects.

The viewing hours will be from 09:00 to 16:00 hours each day.

Secretary to the Cabinet, Patrick Kangwa, has appealed to Zambians to continue mourning the late President with dignity, unity, and respect.

Zambia: A Nation Mourns, Politics Prevail.

The passing of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu on June 5, 2025, has plunged Zambia into a bitter dispute over his funeral arrangements.
The Lungu family, led by his daughter Tasila LUNGU and lawyer Makebi Zulu , has rejected government-led funeral plans, insisting on fulfilling the late president's personal wishes.

A key point of contention is the family's demand that current President Dr. Hakainde Hichilema not attend the funeral, citing Lungu's alleged instructions.

The Impasse

The government, however, has been working to organize a state funeral, sparking a standoff between the two parties.
The Lungu family claims the government has reneged on earlier agreements, undermining their role in the funeral arrangements. In response, President Hichilema has opted for dialogue, to honor the family's wishes.

Calls for Calm

Prominent figures, including Nkosi Mpezeni of the Ngonis and social activist Laura Miti , have urged the nation to put aside differences and ensure a dignified sendoff for the former president.
They emphasize the need for unity and respect for the deceased, rather than allowing politics to dominate the mourning process.

SADC Intervention

In a bid to ease tensions, SADC Chairperson President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa deployed Vice President Constantino Chiwenga as his Special Envoy to Zambia. The intervention aimed to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the impasse, with President Hichilema expressing gratitude for the support and commitment to dialogue.

A Way Forward

As Zambia navigates this challenging period, it's crucial for all parties to prioritize respect, dignity, and unity. The nation should focus on paying tribute to the late President Lungu's legacy, rather than allowing political differences to overshadow the mourning process. By working together and finding common ground, Zambians can ensure a fitting farewell to their former leader and pave the way for healing and unity.

Lyrics

In distant lands, his journey's end,
Edgar Lungu's legacy to amend,
A president, humble, strong and true,
Zambia's heart beats for him anew.

Seven years of leadership, a guiding light,
Loved by his people, day and night,
Though far in death, his spirit remains,
In the land of ancestors, eternal plains.

Tears fall like rain, a nation's grief,
Mournful hearts, a people's relief,
The humble president, a memory stays,
In Zambia's heart, his legacy sways.

In the land he led, his people's pride,
A cherished memory, he'll forever reside,
Rest in peace, ECL, your legacy lives on,
In the hearts of Zambians, forever strong.
