UNIDENTIFIED MAN ATTACKED AND KILLED BY AN ELEPHANT NEAR A LODGE IN ITEZHI - TEZHI.

Unidentified man has been attacked and killed by an Elephant in Itezhi - tezhi District of Southern Province.
The incident occurred on June 6, 2026, between 12:00 hours and 17:50 hours near Kaingu Safari Lodge in Chief Kaingu's area.
Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo has confirmed the incident stating that workers at the safari lodge heard unusual noise from a herd of elephants approximately 30 metres from the lodge at around 12:00 hours, suggesting that the animals had become agitated.
He says as a precautionary measure, they accounted for all members of staff who were on duty and confirmed that they were safe.
He however says at about 17:50 hours, the body of an unknown male person was discovered lying in the thickets near the lodge.
The matter was later reported to the police.
He says police officers visited the scene and confirmed the incident.
He says the deceased was found with multiple injuries consistent with an elephant attack, and torn clothing believed to belong to him.
The deceased was later identified as Christopher Munsanje, who, according to the identifying witness, was known to have a history of mental illness, who is believed to have come from Chikanta Chiefdom in Kalomo District and had reportedly been seen roaming within the area during the month of May 2026.
The body was retrieved and deposited into Itezhi-Tezhi District Hospital Mortuary awaiting burial.
Meanwhile an inquiry file has been opened.
