MALAWIAN FARM HELPER DROWNS IN MWASEMPHANGWE

By Miniver Maluba

Lundazi, April 11, 2025, ZANIS...A 60 year old Malawian national has died after falling into a disused well in Mwasemphangwe area of Lumezi District , Eastern Province.

A decomposed body of Gideon Phiri of Mbwangu Village, Chief Kazengela of Lilongwe District in Malawi was discovered in a well 2 days after he reportedly left home for a drinking spree.

Phiri, until his death, worked as a farm helper for Freza Mutonga 38 of Mutonga Farm in Mwasemphangwe area of Lumezi district.

Eastern Province Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident to the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Lundazi.

"Be informed that Lundazi Police Station, through Lumezi Police Post on April 10, 2025 around 10:00 hours received a report of drowning from Fred Mutonga," Mr Mweemba said.

Police say Phiri died after drowning in a well within the farm area.

Brief facts of the matter are that on April 8, 2025 at about 14:00 hours, the now deceased person went to drink beer, leaving his employer and his family at the farm without stating were he was going to drink beer from.

When he did not show up in the evening, his employer and family did not worry as he had a tendency of spending nights out.

Noticing that he did not return to the farm even on the next day , his employer and the family began to look for him.

A continued search led to the discovery of Phiri's decomposed body in an abandoned well within the farm two days after he disappeared from home.

Police suspect that the deceased could have fallen into the well in the night on his way back from a drinking spree.

Phiri's body has since been retrieved from the well and physical body inspection revealed no visible injuries.

Due to the decomposed state of the body, the family was advised to bury their relative.

But police marked the grave for possible exhumation.

The Resident Doctors Association of Zambia (RDAZ) stands in unwavering solidarity with the Botswana Doctors Union (BDU) as you advocate for fair working conditions, particularly your recent resolution on minimum service provision for emergency calls effective 7th April 2025. We commend your principled stance against the exploitation of doctors and your commitment to safeguarding both patient care and the well being of medical professionals.

Doctors globally are bound by the ethical duty to prioritize patient safety, but this cannot come at the expense of their health, rights, or dignity. Your position limiting emergency calls to one 24-hour shift per month, ensuring minimum staffing levels, and rejecting the misuse of overtime aligns with internationally recognized standards.

The World Medical Association (WMA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommend that continuous duty hours not exceed 24 hours, followed by adequate rest, to prevent burnout and medical errors. Many nations enforce a 48-hour weekly work limit under the working time directive or conditions of service in public service, emphasizing that overburdening clinicians jeopardizes both practitioners and patients.

As we extend our solidarity to the Botswana Doctors' Union BDU, we also reflect on similar challenges faced by our members here in Zambia. The call for humane working conditions is not only a national concern but a regional necessity. We reaffirm our commitment to advocating for improved healthcare systems and the protection of all doctor’s rights across Southern Africa.

The path to sustainable healthcare lies in respecting doctor's rights, fostering dialogue, and investing in systemic solutions not intimidation or overreliance on exhausted personnel.

In unity, we remind all parties that the fight for dignified working conditions is inseparable from the fight for quality healthcare. We stand ready to amplify your cause regionally and internationally until justice prevails.

GOVERNMENT CALLS FOR UNITED ACTION TO ADDRESS WASH CHALLENGES IN SOUTHERN PROVINCE

Southern Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Yolanta Mutyambe has urged stakeholders to collaborate and accelerate efforts to improve the Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector in Southern Province.

Speaking at the Southern Province Civil Society Organisations’ Regional Coordination Meeting in Choma District organised by the Water Voices United project, Ms Mutyambe commended the Zambia NGO WASH Forum for its role in decentralised coordination and hosting similar initiatives in other provinces.

She highlighted significant challenges in the region, including low sanitation investment, limited water coverage, and high salinity levels in districts like Kazungula.

Ms. Mutyambe empahsised the need for prioritised collaboration to ensure equitable access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene across the province.

Earlier, Zambia NGO WASH Forum Advocacy Officer Nonde Lwatula explained that the meeting aimed to expand the Forum membership through the Water Voices United Project.

Mr. Lwatula said the transformative four-year project is co-funded by the European Union and Danish People's Aid and spearheaded by SNV in partnership with the NGO WASH Forum.

"This initiative aims to enhance the capabilities and synergies among WASH Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Zambia. By fostering the CSOs role in WASH governance, the project supports the Zambian Government's efforts towards the progressive realization of the Human Right to Water and Sanitation. Together, we are not just aiming for change; we're ensuring a sustainable and equitable future where access to clean water and safe sanitation becomes a reality for all," he said.

This is contained in a statement issued by Zambia NGO WASH Forum Communications Officer Bangwe Naviley.

NAPSA PAYS OUT K10 BILLION IN PARTIAL WITHDRAWALS TO MEMBERS

Lusaka, Zambia (9th April 2025). The National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA) has disbursed a total of K10.1 billion in partial withdrawals to 487,389 eligible members out of the total membership of 1,119,412, since the implementation of the partial withdrawal benefit in April 2023.

Of the total amount paid out, K6 billion represents members’ raw contributions, while K4.1 billion is attributed to indexation and interest earned - accounting for 41% of the total amount paid. This demonstrates the value of long-term pension savings and the growth of members’ funds under the scheme.

Of the 487,389 recipients,
- 76,980 are women, who have collectively received K1.7 billion
- 104,293 are categorized as youths, having received a combined total of K1.2 billion

Speaking on the development, NAPSA Director General reaffirmed the Authority’s strong financial standing, stating that the fund remains liquid and sustainable for all benefit types. This assurance is backed by the scheme’s remarkable 31% growth in fund value, from K67 billion in December 2023 to K88 billion in December 2024.

Beyond individual empowerments espoused by the Republican President Mr Hakainde Hichilema, the economic impact of the partial withdrawals has been significant. Numerous beneficiaries have invested their funds in various ventures such as housing, poultry businesses, trade, government bonds, and treasury bills, contributing meaningfully to national economic activity and job creation.

LEVY MWANAWASA UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL CONDUCTS SUCCESSFUL BRAIN TUMOUR SURGERY

With the increase in advanced medical diagnostic equipment, competent personnel and increased health coverage, Brain tumours among other complicated diseases of the central nervous system are increasingly being diagnosed country wide.

Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital has continued to manage these complicated cases and just last week, our Neurosurgery team Led by Dr. Lubasi Manyando, once again successfully performed a Craniotomy and Tumour Resection which is basically the removal of a tumour from the brain. This surgery was performed on an elderly man aged 71 from Kasama that presented with a huge brain tumour weighing about 200 grams which was located on very important and dangerous structures of his brain.

This tumour had caused weakness of the patient’s right limbs of the body, headaches, and seizures with intermittent loss of consciousness. Dr. Lubasi explains that the only definitive treatment plan in such a case is a complete surgical removal of the brain tumour. However, due to its dangerous location, a neurosurgeon needs to be extra careful and very accurate so as not to damage the surrounding structures like the motor cortex and also vital blood vessels that may cause fatality if injured during the process.

Therefore, the success story in this case is that the tumour was removed in totality without injuring the said structures, with minimal bleeding and the patient was extubated (withdrawn from breathing support) during the first hour of his post-surgery in the Intensive care Unit (ICU). He was transferred from the ICU just after a day of his surgery, to the normal wards where he continues to recover awaiting to be discharged to home. His limbs weakness has greatly improved, he no longer has headaches, no seizures and his post-surgical wound has healed very well.

The team managed to completely remove the whole tumour in just 5 to 6 hours.it is with great hope that with the continued improvement in the area of modern and high-tech equipment, the Hospital will continue to record positive outcomes with shortened theatre time and quicker recovery for patients.

The surgical team comprised of Dr. Lubasi Manyando – consultant neurosurgeon, Dr. Ndjobvu and Dr. Kabwe as assistant neurosurgery registrars. Anaesthesia was given by the team led by Dr Marina, Mr Patrick Musonda, Luyando and Sr Lydia Phiri. The scrub nursing team comprised of sister Sinai, Joyce, Omar and was led by Given Mulamba.

With improved health care systems in Zambia, The County will continue to record a reduction on the costs attached to patient referrals abroad. The minimal cost of this procedure abroad is about $ 10,000.00 translating to k 280, 000.00.

The treater team thank the Ministry of Health and Hospital Management for the continued support in ensuring that the necessary, infrastructure, equipment, trained human resource and supplies are available as these are critical aspects that contribute significantly to the health sector in Zambia - as a healthy nation is a productive nation.
