ITALY GOVT APPROVES SUPPORT TO CLIMATE CHANGE LINKED PROJECTS IN LUNDAZI NCHELENGE,MoH

The Governments of the Republic of Zambia and Italy have successfully held the first meeting of the Joint Committee under the Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation between the two countries to combat climate change.
Among the achievements of the virtual meeting held yesterday are that the Joint Committee approved, in principle, the framework documents under the Memorandum of Understanding, namely the Rules of Procedure, Guiding Principles, Financing Document and the Monitoring and Evaluation mechanism.
Another notable score was the approval in principle of three projects submitted by the Republic of Zambia for the support of the Italian Government, namely:
1) Tilapia, Cage farming on Lake Mweru, Nchelenge District: an integrated cage culture, fry, fingerlings and fish feed production project to be implemented by a private sector applicant, Blue Water Aquaculture Limited;
2) Upgrade of the Lundazi Green Village Project – Magodi Solar mini-grid: that seeks to provide power (electricity) to rural villages through the use of renewable energy sources and was submitted by the National Technology Business Centre; and a project on
3) Upscaling of the reduction of emission from the health sector in Lusaka Province, submitted by the Ministry of Health to scale up implementation of sound health care waste management systems in Lusaka.
Ministry of National Development Planning Permanent Secretary (Development Planning and Administration) Mr. Chola J. Chabala, led the Zambian delegation while Italy’s Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea Director of Division Dr. Giovanni Brunelli led his country’s delegation. Zambia Ambassador to Italy His Excellency Dr. Joseph Katema and his Italian counterpart in Zambia, His Excellency Mr. Antonino Maggiore also participated in the meeting, and two other government officials from each delegation.
The Joint Committee operationalises the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Climate Change Vulnerability, Risk Assessment, Adaptation and Mitigation that was signed by the two Governments on 30th November 2018. The Minister of National Development Planning Hon. Alexander Chiteme, MP, and Italian Minister of Environment, Land and Sea Mr. Sergio Costa, had signed the MoU on behalf of their respective countries in Rome, Italy.
Under the Memorandum of Understanding, the Zambian Government is represented by the Ministry of National Development Planning and the Italian Government represented by the Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea. The Memorandum of Understanding, among other objectives, seeks to stimulate the transition towards a sustainable low carbon economy.
Speaking during the meeting, Mr. Chabala reiterated the Zambian Government’s commitment to ensuring that climate change interventions are strengthened in order to limit the adverse effects of climate change on socio-economic development.
The Permanent Secretary said it was notable that one of the projects approved was private sector-led, a demonstration of the deliberate efforts the Zambian Government has taken to promote private sector participation in implementing national development programmes as enshrined in the Seventh National Development Plan (7NDP).
The positive outcomes of the Joint Committee meeting bring to fruition some of the contents of the Memorandum of Understanding and will further strengthen bilateral relations between Zambia and Italy.

NEWS DIGGERS APOLOGIZES FOR MISLEADING ZAMBIANS ABOUT PRESIDENT LUNGU

IN our Thursday, September 17, 2020 edition, we quoted President Edgar Lungu saying that “Whether Zambians like it or not, he will remain President of the Republic of Zambia”.

It has been brought to our attention that the Head of State, who was speaking in Bemba, was addressing UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema, and stated that:

“Nangu chibe shani, namailo litali, na 2021 litali, lelo kufika next election mu August pa 12 mu 2021, president ninebo! Nangu ulefwaya olo taulefwaya, president ninebo!”

Therefore, President Lungu did not say: “I will remain President, whether Zambians like it or not.”

We hereby now issue our unreserved apology to the Head of State, His Excellency President Edgar Lungu, and the Patriotic Front, for the damage and inconvenience caused by our inaccuracy in translating his message at the said rally.

LUANSHYA MAYOR NATHAN CHANDA EMPOWERS WOMEN GROUPS IN THE DISTRICT

Luanshya District PF Chairlady Getrude Sichone says a leader who empowers women, has empowered the whole nation.

Mrs. Sichone said this when Luanshya Mayor Nathan Chanda who is also PF Copperbelt Chairman empowered 10 women groups from
Roan, Mpatamato, and other areas in Luanshya District with 500 birds, feed stock and other materials needed to rare birds.

"This is the first time we are seeing this here in Luanshya. We are so thankful that he has decided to empower the women. We know that Nathan Chanda as Mayor and PF provincial Chairman, he can't manage to do everything alone and empower everyone at once. He has looked at the women and knows what the mother's go through. Women do a lot and they need a hand to survive," said Mrs Sichone.

"We just want to assure that we have a son who cares for us. He is the Provincial Chairman for the Copperbelt, but mayor of Luanshya at the same time. He is our son and we will assure him of our support in everything that he will do. As Luanshya women, we are so happy that the Provincial Chairman is coming from Luanshya. This is where the Chairman for the entire province is coming from. Look at the way he is showing love to us," she said.

Luanshya Mayor Nathan Chanda said President Edgar Lungu values highly the contributions of women to national development.

"I looked around and thought what can I do for my mothers the women. You see the leadership of President Edgar Lungu has valued highly what the women do for the country. That is why I also took it personal to see what I can do for women empowerment. Empowerment will come especially to the women and the youth. We can't do without our women, so it is just prudent that we give back to our women," said Mr. Chanda MCC.

"What we are giving you is a start up package and will give to all the wards in Roan Constituency and there after Luanshya Constituency. When you see others empowered, just know that your time will also come. This empowerment will benefit you our women in Luanshya. We the children of Luanshya, we have a father President Lungu who cares. Just today, we will give 500 birds, that will be shared in 10 women groups. This total cost for the project will be worth K500, 000. This project is not for me, but for all even your children and our fathers at home. Let us be transparent and accountable in this exercise."

Mr. Chanda also encouraged the women to venture into fish farming.

"Don't just keep the birds, but also go in fish farming. This is like a story in the Bible, those that will use these talents well will also get further benefits," said Mr. Chanda.

In a vote of thanks, Roan Constituency PF Chairlady Herriat Nsofwa expressed gratitude to Mr. Chanda for the gesture.

"For us we don't know what to do and say, because we have never seen such good a thing in Roan for the women."

And Mable Mwansa said the women have been seeing empowerment programs on TV.

"We just used to see these empowerments on TV elsewhere, but we never lost hope because we knew that we have a city father in Luanshya who cares for us. Today here we are and empowerment is here in our hand," said Mrs Mwansa.

And Mr. Martin Chisanga encouraged the women to continue supporting the leadership of PF government under President Edgar Chagwa Lungu and mr Nathan Chanda as Mayor of Luanshya.

"For over many years we never had a good road going to the graveyard to put our relatives to rest. But through this Mayor Mr Htoday, he has graded the road and now we can move safely to go and put to rest our relatives. This is leadership from our mayor," said Mr. Chisanga.

ZAMBIA BIDS FAREWELL TO THE UNESCO (ICH)

ZAMBIA has bade farewell to the UNESCO Inter-governmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) where she served a complete four-year term as Bureau Member and Vice President representing the Africa Group. Zambia’s Ambassador to France Dr. Christine Kaseba-SATA, expressed appreciation and profound gratitude to the General Assembly for having accorded the Country an opportunity to serve on an important Committee in the UNESCO Cultural Sector.
