Kabwe Residents Complain After Failing to Receive ZESCO Tokens Bought via Airtel Money

Several residents in Kabwe have complained after purchasing ZESCO electricity units through Airtel Money but did not receive their token numbers, despite being charged for the transactions.

One of the affected customers, Rachel Mwansa, said she bought electricity units on Saturday but did not receive a token. She said the incident has left her home without power, causing significant inconvenience.

Another resident, Cleopatra, who operates a small poultry business, said the power outage has disrupted her operations and placed her chickens at risk due to a lack of proper lighting and heat.

Albert Mutambo said attempts to retrieve his token were unsuccessful, alleging that “both ZESCO and Airtel are blaming each other.”

Meanwhile, Airtel Zambia’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mrs. Yuyo Nachali-Kambikambi, confirmed that some customers experienced challenges in receiving their ZESCO electricity tokens after making payments via Airtel Money.

She stated that the issue was caused by a temporary system delay on the side of one of Airtel Zambia’s partners, noting that “the matter has since been resolved following close engagement with the partner.”

Mrs. Nachali-Kambikambi assured all affected customers that they would receive full refunds directly into their Airtel Money wallets by close of business today.

She further apologised for the inconvenience and thanked customers for their patience and continued trust in Airtel Money.

As of press time, ZESCO had not yet issued a statement on the matter.

The Higher Education Authority -HEA-has warned the general public against enrolling in Broken Hill College of Applied Sciences and Education(KABWE), Chibombo University College(CHIBOMBO), Mafken University(MUFULIRA), and Serenje University College(SERENJE), as these institutions are operating illegally in Zambia and are not registered under the Higher Education Act, 2013.

HEA Corporate Communications Officer Birbal Musoba says recent inspections conducted by the HEA’s Inspectorate Unit have revealed that the named institutions are offering or advertising higher education services without registration, contrary to Part IV, Section 15 (1) of the Act, which explicitly states that “a person shall not operate a private Higher Education Institution unless the institution is registered under this Act.”
