Angola Honours Zambia’s Founding President, Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda, as a Key Figure in Its Independence

Luanda, Angola, 6 November 2025 ----The Government of the Republic of Angola has today, 6 November 2025 conferred the Commemorative Medal of the 50th Anniversary of National Independence upon the late Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda, Founding President of the Republic of Zambia.

The prestigious medal, awarded in the Honour Class, was personally presented by His Excellency President João Lourenço during a special ceremony held in Luanda as part of Angola’s Golden Jubilee Independence celebrations, to be officially commemorated on 11 November 2025.

Through this high honour, the Angolan Government has recognised Dr. Kaunda as a pivotal figure in the country’s liberation and independence, acknowledging his steadfast support for Angola’s freedom struggle and his lifelong dedication to the liberation of southern Africa.

Representing the Kaunda family at the ceremony was Ms. Musata Kaunda, who graciously received the award on behalf of the late President.

The Commemorative Medal of the 50th Anniversary of National Independence is conferred in three categories — the Honour Class, the Independence Class, and the Peace and Development Class — to recognise individuals and institutions whose courage, leadership, and service have contributed to Angola’s history, peace, and development.

His Excellency Rev. Dr. Elias Munshya, Ambassador of the Republic of Zambia to the Republic of Angola, expressed profound pride on behalf of the Government and people of Zambia, noting that this honour reaffirms Dr. Kaunda’s enduring legacy as a pillar of Pan-Africanism, a defender of human dignity, and a trusted ally in Africa’s liberation journey.

This recognition further strengthens the historical bonds of friendship and solidarity between Zambia and Angola — two nations united by shared values of freedom, peace, and mutual respect.

lusaka lawyer drags airtel to court over poor network and service failure.

Lusaka-based lawyer Simon Mwila has sued Airtel Zambia over what he describes as persistent network failures, unreliable internet connectivity, and overall poor service delivery.

Mr Mwila accuses the mobile service provider of breaching its contractual obligations by failing to offer consistent and quality communication services, despite receiving full payments from customers. He is demanding compensation for emotional distress, loss of income, and wasted expenditure on data and airtime.

Court documents filed before the Subordinate Court reveal that Mwila subscribes to Airtel under three separate numbers, including a 5G router, and has experienced months of erratic network disruptions that have affected both his personal and professional communications. He claims that these disruptions have made it difficult to make phone calls, send messages, or access the internet, thereby undermining the purpose of the service and impacting his ability to conduct business. Despite lodging several complaints, Mr Mwila argues that Airtel has taken no reasonable action to rectify the situation or offer redress to affected customers.

In his lawsuit, Mr Mwila seeks damages for breach of contract, negligence, emotional distress, and financial loss. He also wants the court to compel Airtel to urgently improve its network infrastructure and refund customers for substandard services.

The case highlights growing public frustration over unreliable mobile services and could set a legal precedent for holding telecom providers accountable for failing to meet consumer expectations.

lusaka city council orders corrective action at ziyang manufacturing over serious health violations

The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has directed Ziyang Manufacturing Company Limited to implement urgent corrective public health measures before it can resume operations, following the discovery of multiple violations during a recent inspection.

According to the LCC, the company was found to be operating under conditions that severely breach public health standards. Workers were reportedly locked inside the factory and forced to use buckets as makeshift toilets due to a lack of proper sanitation facilities. Inspectors also found evidence of open defecation in an incomplete structure, unsafe waste disposal, effluent discharge from an improvised kitchen, and poor ventilation across the facility.

‎HEA Maintains That Some Colleges Are Operating Illegally Despite Payment Claims

‎By Yambayamba Margret

‎The Higher Education Authority (HEA) has maintained that institutions mentioned in its recent Statement, including the Broken Hill College of Applied Science and Education, are operating illegally as they are not duly registered under the Higher Education Amendment Act of 2021.

‎This follows a statement released by Broken Hill College of Applied Science and Education in response to the HEA’s notice issued yesterday. The college provided a receipt showing a payment of K15,000, claiming that it had followed the correct procedure in the accreditation and registration process.

‎In a phone interview earlier today, HEA Corporate Communications Officer Mr. Birbal Bornface Musoba said the affected institutions were previously operating under other regulatory bodies before the Higher Education Amendment Act came into effect. He explained that the Act gave all higher education institutions a grace period up to March 31, 2024, to register with the Authority. He added that the period had since expired and that any institution not registered under the new law was operating illegally.

‎Mr. Musoba stated that the payment of K15,000 by Broken Hill College did not mean the institution was registered. He said the college needed to clarify what the payment was for, as registration for a higher education institution involved more than just making that payment.

‎He further explained that registration required the submission of all necessary documents, an inspection of the institution’s facilities, and the issuance of a certificate confirming that the institution had been approved to operate.

‎Mr. Musoba emphasized that only institutions that had undergone the full registration process and been issued with certificates by the Higher Education Authority were legally permitted to operate.

‎He also urged members of the public to verify the registration status of higher education institutions before enrolling to avoid being misled by unregistered institutions.
