He was born in Mufulira where his father was a miner.

He started out as a striker and played for Lubuto Amateur Club in Mufulira.

At the age of 17 during a practice session, the regular goalkeeper was absent so he was forced to man the posts by his colleague.

He played so well and enjoyed playing in goal that he decided to make the switch permanent.

He Participated in the 1986,1990 and 1992 Africa Cup of Nations.

He led Zambia to the 1984 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup when he saved 3 penalties in the 3–0 penalty shoot-out win against Malawi.

In 1990 African Cup of Nations where journalists voted him the best goalkeeper at the tournament, keeping four clean sheets in five games.

He was among those killed in the crash of the team plane in Gabon in 1993.

CHONYA DISHES K20,000 TO SUPPORT UPND INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS

As Zambia approaches its 60th Independence anniversary, Kafue of Parliament Hon. Miriam Chonya held an engagement meeting with constituency and district officials to strategize for the upcoming on October 24.

In her address at the district party secretariat yesterday, Ms. Chonya emphasized the importance of filling all party structures and urged members to mobilize and enroll new supporters.

With Independence Day approaching, she called on party leaders to ensure their members participate in the commemorations. Ms. Chonya also urged District Chairperson Clifford Mwaba to demonstrate strong leadership by addressing gaps within the party, ensuring that the district receives the necessary party regalia. She stressed the need to end conflicts and foster unity. “Let’s not be like horses that need to be dragged to the river, we can be proactive,” she remarked.

The 2024 Independence celebrations will coincide with the UPND's third anniversary in power. Ms. Chonya, who is also a member of the organizing committee for this year's commemoration, appealed to committee members to contribute toward the organization of the event. Senior party officials at both district and constituency levels were encouraged with contributing at least K150 each, while District Commissioner Mr. Maurice Hikapulwe pledged two cows valued at K7,500 each.

In response, District UPND Chairperson Clifford Mwaba expressed gratitude to Hon. Miriam Chonya for her generous contribution of K20,000. Mr. Mwaba affirmed that his office would work diligently to fill party structures, reiterating his commitment to strong leadership in the district.

He also took the opportunity to congratulate Hon. Miriam Chonya on her recent appointment as Country Ambassador for Women Political Leaders in Zambia. He expressed confidence in her abilities, describing the appointment as a testament to her humble, committed, and exemplary leadership.

The engagement meeting was attended by constituency and district leaders, members of the Zambia at 60 organizing committee, as well as Malundu Ward Councilor Devlin Mwiinga, David Sampa of Kasenji Ward, and Modester Nyambe from Shabusale.

CHONYA FIRES STERN WARNING AGAINST SALE OF CHIPARAMBA GROUND

Kafue Member of Parliament Hon Mirriam Chonya has sounded a strong warning to the people attempting to sale Chiparamba ground.

In a statement made available to Voice Of Kafue, Chonya says she has received with sadness information that some unscrupulous individuals were trying to subdivide Chiparamba ground and sell off parcels of land by way of plots, a situation she says is detrimental to the growth and future of Chiparamba School.

She stated that the children at the school will need a play ground for various sporting activities, adding that Chiparamba ground has also served the community and hosted a number of games.

"I want to discourage the concerned people not to proceed with that plan and at the same time urge Kafue Town Council not to grant the said individuals authority to demarcate Chiparamba ground into housing plots... " Chonya said.

She has since advised the interested parties to seek alternative land on which to develop their housing plans.
