MEANWHILE IN ZAMBIA
Zambia's President Hakainde Hichilema has been sworn in for a second five-year term as his main election rival, Brian Mundubile, faces treason charges. Authorities accused opposition figures of involvement in an alleged armed insurrection, an allegation the opposition denies. Diggers News reported that Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, were transferred to Mukobeko Maximum Security Prison after being charged with treason. Hichilema won the August 13 election with 60% of the vote, compared with Mundubile's 38%. Mundubile rejected the result, alleging it had been manipulated. EU observers said polling day was largely peaceful but raised concerns about weaknesses in vote counting and verification. Hichilema, who first came to power in 2021, is credited with restructuring Zambia's debt and reducing inflation, although many people continue to struggle with the cost of living. Thousands of supporters gathered in Lusaka for Tuesday's inauguration, attended by several African leaders.
