THE LIKELY CONFUSION HON. KAMPAMBA MULENGA COULD BRING TO UPND

Zambia’s political landscape has continued to evolve rapidly, with alliances, defections, and shifting loyalties becoming a common feature ahead of every major election cycle. One political figure whose movements continue to spark debate is Kampamba Mulenga. Known for her strong political personality, outspoken nature, and influence within parts of the Copperbelt, her possible alignment with the United Party for National Development (UPND) could potentially create both opportunities and confusion within the ruling party.

One major concern is ideological inconsistency. UPND has spent years building it's identity around economic recovery, governance reforms, and unity after a long opposition struggle. Bringing in a political figure with a different political history and style could create internal tensions among long-serving party members who sacrificed for the party during difficult periods. Some loyal cadres may feel sidelined if newcomers are perceived to receive preferential treatment or influential positions too quickly.
Another possible source of confusion would be factional politics. In many political parties, influential individuals often arrive with their own support base and loyalists. If not properly managed, this can divide structures at Ward, constituency and provincial levels. Supporters of Hon. Kampamba Mulenga may push for greater influence within party operations, while existing UPND members may resist such changes, leading to unnecessary internal battles.

One surprising and most shocking is the manner she has decided to defect to the ruling UPND, in what many would have hoped to be some sort of a huge gathering, it was done indoors. The bigger question is why?

The answer is simple, because she is fully aware that the loyal members she's remained with can not accept noting the sentiments made previous by calling out the UPND and saying "Kwateni order i can't join UPND ifwe tuliba Green!"

Many of her followers are left in limbo as they don't know exactly what to do or even say!
Yes politics is about numbers but allowing Hon. Kampamba is one major mistake the UPND has done.

Let's look at Rashida Mulenga's joining of UPND some years back. It is up to now the biggest ever defection done in Kalulushi and the UPND are rest assured of the numbers she brought and those that she gave the Republican President.

Let us call a spade a spade. Hon Kampamba Mulenga has followed Rashida Mulenga because in hrr narrative she doesn't want to ever see her anywhere as MP. That has been her core idea and plan. This clearly shows how bitter she is towards Rashida Mulenga.

Additionally, public perception could become a challenge. Politics is heavily influenced by consistency and trust. If voters begin to view UPND as a party absorbing politicians merely for political convenience rather than shared vision and values, this could weaken the party’s credibility among some supporters. Opposition parties would likely exploit such developments by accusing UPND of abandoning it's principles for political survival.

There is also the issue of political messaging. Hon. Kampamba Mulenga has previously been associated with strong opposition rhetoric against UPND. A sudden alignment without clear explanation could confuse ordinary citizens and supoorters alike who closely follow political narratives. Voters may question whether political leaders truly stand for principles or simply shift positions based on political opportunity.

However, others may argue that political inclusiveness is part of democracy and national unity. Supporters of her joining UPND could claim that broadening the party strengthens it's national appeal and promotes reconciliation. In politics, attracting experienced figures from different backgrounds can also be viewed as a sign of growing political strength.
Ultimately, whether Hon. Kampamba Mulenga brings confusion or strategic advantage to UPND would depend on how the party manages integration, communication, and internal unity. Political transitions require careful leadership, transparency, and respect for existing party structures to avoid unnecessary instability.
