Chief Tembwe of the Senga speaking people in Chama district of Eastern Province has appealed to his fellow traditional leaders to join hands with goverment in ending child marriages which have taken a toll on the society.

The traditional leader was speaking during a stakeholders meeting on ending child marriages organized by the Ministry of Community Development and Social services under the theme "stopping Early Child Marriages" in Chama district.

Chief Tembwe highlighted the detrimental effects of child marriages on young girls.

The traditional leader added that early marriages lead to gender-based violence, increased poverty, and a higher risk of sexually transmitted diseases, which are particularly challenging for young girls and boys.

Chief Tembwe re-emphasised the need for various interventions by goverment and cooperating partners aimed at ending early marriages and ensuring that girls remain in school.

He reaffirmed his commitment towards ending child marriages in his chiefdom which said had continued to rob society of future leaders.

Chief Tembwe noted that the introduction of free education had come at the right time adding that most of the disadvantaged children had now gone back to school under the free education policy.

He said government legislation on Marriage Policy and the Child Code were basically designed to discourage early marriages and must be supported at all cost.

The chief stated that in his Chiefdom he has put in measures such as no children should be found at places where they sell beer, bars and nightclubs or play loud music at 21 hours and we penalize children who visit drinking places .
