THE MINISTER OF WATER DEVELOPMENT AND SANITATION VISITS KAPIRI MPOSHI TO CELEBRATE THE GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY

By In'utu Mwiya

Local leaders in Kapiri Mposhi, Central Province –gathered with Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, Collins Nzovu, to celebrate the groundbreaking ceremony for a major water project aimed at improving supply in the Ndeke compound, marketplace, and clinic. This initiative is part of the government's ongoing commitment to enhance access to clean water for underserved communities.

The project, which is set to revolutionize water access for residents of Ndeke, will involve the installation of new pipelines and the refurbishment of existing water supply infrastructure. Minister Nzovu emphasized the importance of reliable water access, stating, “Clean water is not just a necessity; it is a fundamental human right. Today marks a significant step toward ensuring the health and well-being of our communities.”

Local leaders, including District Commissioner Francis Hasalama, expressed hope that the project would lead to improved health outcomes and economic opportunities. “With better water supply, our children will spend less time fetching water and more time in school. This project will transform lives,” he remarked.

The initiative is expected to benefit Ndeke residents and will also improve water access for the local marketplace and clinic, enhancing sanitary conditions crucial for public health. Community members have long voiced concerns about the inadequate water supply, which has hindered daily activities and posed health risks.

This ground breaking ceremony was hosted by Lukanga Water Supply and Sanitation Company Limited on Thursday, 14th August, 2025.

ZCSA WARNS AGAINST BUYING SECOND-HAND UNDERWEAR

The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has issued a warning to the general public against purchasing second-hand underwear.

Agency Head of Communications and Public Relations Manager, Brian Hatyoka, stated that second-hand underwear poses serious health risks.

Mr. Hatyoka explained that individuals who wear second-hand undergarments are at increased risk of contracting fungal infections and sexually transmitted diseases.

He emphasized that the ban on the sale of second-hand underwear remains in effect.

Speaking to ZNBC News, Mr. Hatyoka warned that traders found selling such items risk having their goods confiscated.

REDUCTION IN SALARIES FOR MINE WORKERS AFTER SUBCONTRACTING OR OUTSOURCING

One of the complaints I have picked from stakeholders in the mining sector in Kitwe, luanshya, chingola and chililabombwe is that some workers who have been employed by sub contractors appointed to run specific departments is the issue of reduced salaries.

As an example, If a mine worker was getting K 7,000 with the main mining company, for the same nature of work, when employed by the subcontractor, the salary will be reduced and many examples are there on the Copperbelt.

Is the objective of subcontracting for the main mining company to cut labour costs or reduce salaries or to improve efficiency or all the foregoing reasons?

Is outsourcing of key mining operations meant to reduce the overall cost of producing copper by mining companies ?

Are the subcontracted companies being given low valued contracts that they are forced to pay workers lower wages compared to the salaries they used to receive when working for the main mining company ?

What is the role of the labour commissioner and government in all these conversations before a mining company is allowed to lay off workers , who are later employed by a subcontractor with lower wages for the same work ?

SEVEN KILLED IN SOLWEZI-MUTANDA ROAD ACCIDENT

Seven people have died and five others are seriously injured in a road traffic accident on the Solwezi–Mutanda Road in North-Western Province.

The accident occurred on Monday at around 20:40 hours near Kyansununu School and involved a Toyota Noah carrying 12 passengers and a Freightliner truck.

North-Western Province Police Commanding Officer BRIGHTON SIWALE confirmed the incident, identifying the drivers as FRANK MUKENDA for the Noah and JACOB MUMBA for the truck.

Mr. SIWALE said seven passengers in the Noah died on the spot, while the remaining five sustained serious injuries and are admitted to Solwezi General Hospital.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the Noah first hit a stationary truck before colliding with the oncoming Freightliner.

The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the Solwezi General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem, while investigations continue.
