Police Recover Three Suspected Vulture Chicks in Mbala

Police in Mbala District, Northern Province, have recovered three suspected vulture chicks that were being unlawfully kept at a residence in Chila View Compound in the area of Chief Tafuna.

Northern Province Police Commanding Officer, Simunji Mulonda, confirmed the incident in a statement issued to Isunga News today.

He said the birds were recovered on June 5, 2026, around 17:00 hours following a tip-off from a reliable informant.

According to Mr. Mulonda, police officers acted on information that an unknown man was illegally keeping wildlife birds at his residence.

A search of the premises led to the discovery of three suspected vulture chicks hidden inside an empty 50-kilogram sack in a grass-thatched kitchen structure.

The suspected owner was not found at the scene and was therefore not apprehended.

The recovered birds were secured and handed over to the Zambia Wildlife Authority for further management and investigations. The wildlife authority has since engaged the Veterinary Department to assess and document the birds before their transfer to Lusaka for specialised care.

Police have launched investigations aimed at identifying and apprehending the suspect, as well as establishing how the protected birds came into his possession.

Mr. Mulonda has since reminded members of the public that the illegal possession, trafficking, or keeping of protected wildlife species is an offence under Zambian law and urged citizens to report suspected wildlife crimes to the police or relevant authorities.

He noted that further updates are expected as investigations continue.
