I was glad to join the Keep Zambia Clean, Green, and Healthy campaign in Mushota, Pambashe Constituency.
This was an initiative led by Kawambwa Town Council with support from stakeholders such as ZAFICO and the blessing of Chief Mushota.
Key activities included:
โข Slashing overgrown grass around the Mushota Rural Health Centre maternity block,
โข Sweeping and drainage cleaning around the market,
โข Distribution of 10 waste binsโstrategically placed at Mushota Market, and Primary & Secondary Schools.
MAJOR CHALLENGE:
A major challenge in the area is the indiscriminate disposal of sugarcane remains (bagasse), plastics, and bottles, particularly into roadsides and drainages.
A GLIMPSE OF HOPE:
While on-site, I watched kids casually litter sugarcane waste but after a calm conversation, they happily began collecting and throwing it into bins. It was a simple, joyful moment that proved:
Mindset change is possible and it often begins with one conversation.
With patience and awareness, we can shape future stewards of the environment.
COMMENDABLE EFFORTS:
Thanks to Kawambwa Town Council for championing such practical, community-centered interventions. Providing bins and engaging stakeholders is a solid step toward sustainable waste management.
A CALL TO ACTION:
To the people of Mushota and beyond:
โข Use the bins provided,
โข Keep litter out of drainages,
โข Teach our children to care for the environment.
The change begins with us. Letโs protect our environment not just for today, but for tomorrow.
