๐ฅ THE LISTENING CHALLENGE
Communication is the lifeblood of human connection โ yet most of us only master half of it. Weโre taught how to read, write, and speak, but rarely how to listen. From childhood, classrooms train our tongues and pens โ but not our ears.
And yet, by design, God gave us two ears and one mouth โ a divine ratio for success: listen twice as much as you speak. But real listening isnโt just about your outer ears โ itโs about your inner ear, the one that catches truth before words even form. Itโs about a capacity to listen to the unspoken, your desires, pains and aspirations.
Think about it โ have you ever heard of a listening club? We have debate clubs, reading clubs, and writing workshopsโฆ but where are the listening clubs? Maybe thatโs why our conversations are loud but shallow, our meetings long but empty, and our relationships busy but misunderstood.
The Bible says, โIf you will diligently hearken (listen) to the voice of the Lordโฆ He will set you on highโ (Deut. 28:1). Heaven promotes hearers, not just talkers. The greatest leaders and innovators arenโt just people who speak well โ they are people who listen deeply โ to people, to purpose, and to the whispers within.
Dr. Stephen Covey identified five levels in the Listening Continuum:
1๏ธโฃ Ignoring
2๏ธโฃ Pretend Listening
3๏ธโฃ Selective Listening
4๏ธโฃ Attentive Listening
5๏ธโฃ Empathetic Listening
Only the fifth level transforms. The first four listen from their own frame; the last listens from the otherโs world. Thatโs where influence and transformation lives.
So hereโs your challenge today:
Donโt just listen to reply โ listen to reveal.
Donโt just hear sounds โ hear souls.
Donโt just pay attention โ pay respect.
Because those who master listening donโt just make noise โ they make history. ๐๐ญ๐ฅ
