Vice President Mutale Nalumango says government has no intention of bribing the Judge Presiding over the case of late President Edgar Lungu.

Ms Nalumango says the two individuals in the leaked viral audio Mafinga MP Robert Chabinga and Community Development Minister Doreen Mwamba were merely hallucinating and making their own suggestions which must not be mistaken as an official government position.

A viral audio recording purportedly featuring Community Development Minister Doreen Mwamba and Mafinga MP Robert Chabinga has ignited a wave of controversy, with explosive claims implicating President Hakainde Hichilema in covert political manoeuvres surrounding the burial of former President Edgar Lungu.

In the recording, the two officials allegedly discuss “mingalato” (political scheming), including claims that Chabinga was sent to South Africa to bribe a judge and orchestrate protests aimed at shaping public perception against burying Lungu abroad. The authenticity of the audio has been challenged, with some UPND representatives suggesting it may be AI-generated a defense that has only fuelled public skepticism and outrage.

Social media has erupted with calls for accountability, with some users demanding the president’s resignation. The government has yet to issue an official statement, and the silence is amplifying concerns over diplomatic tensions with South Africa, especially following a separate legal misstep involving the late president’s family.

This scandal adds to a growing list of controversies facing the UPND administration, which came to power promising reform, unity, and economic recovery. With elections looming in 2026, critics argue that the party’s credibility is eroding, and the opposition may gain momentum as public trust wanes.

Mufumbwe Tragedy Exposes Urgent Need for Real Solutions to Youth Unemployment and Small-Scale Mining Crisis

When Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe announced in Parliament that strides had been made toward formalizing Zambia’s small-scale mining sector—often referred to as illegal mining—many saw a glimmer of hope. It was believed this would finally bring order to what has become a high-stakes survival space for thousands of unemployed youth.

Yet the recent chaos in Mufumbwe, which claimed human life, painfully reminds us that promises and policies alone won’t resolve a deeply entrenched issue. This tragedy lays bare the harsh reality: no amount of political manoeuvring, excessive force, or reactionary statements can fix a problem rooted in economic desperation.

The Elephant in the Room Let’s not pretend: hunger and poverty are driving young people to risk their lives, not ambition. It's not about choice—it's about survival. With livelihoods hanging in the balance, these youth face a brutal dilemma: risk everything or go to bed hungry.

The government must tackle unemployment head-on. Spin and denial will not erase the pain felt in households across Zambia. And no political speech can mask the truth: a hungry youth is an angry youth. Cosmetic solutions delay the fallout, but like an untreated illness, they only deepen the crisis.

A Multi-Layered Problem Requires Multi-Stakeholder Action That Mufumbwe’s tragedy coincides with the policy rollout is telling. It underscores how complex and volatile this issue is. A one-size-fits-all approach won’t cut it. Stakeholders—including the very youth at the center of this crisis—must be part of the solution.

Branding miners as criminals and unleashing law enforcement on desperate youth only exacerbates tensions. This isn’t about law and order—it’s about human dignity and survival.

Time to Show Real Leadership. This is not the moment to score political points. It’s a moment for courage, humility, and vision. Our youth aren’t just listening anymore—they’re seeing through the rhetoric. The time of empty promises is over.

Leaders must move beyond rhetoric and recognize the pain of the people. Real dialogue, inclusive policies, and urgent action are the way forward. Anything less will only deepen the divide between Zambia’s youth and its leadership.
