COPPER PRINCESSES PROGRESS IN WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS

The Zambia Under-20 Women’s National Team has kept its FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup hopes alive after recording a 2-0 victory over Burundi at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Saturday.

The result handed the Copper Princesses a 4-1 aggregate win in the second-round qualifier, keeping them firmly on track for a historic first-ever qualification to the global showpiece.

Edith Phiri broke the deadlock in the ninth minute with a powerful header to give Zambia an early lead. Just before the break, Mercy Chipasula struck the second goal of the day, giving the team a comfortable cushion going into the interval.

In the second half, the girls continued to dominate play and pushed for more goals, but the first-half strikes proved enough to seal qualification to the next stage.

"We are very happy because we have qualified to the next round, " Zambia coach Charity Ntala said said after the game, "this is want we wanted, we wanted to qualify to the next round."

Burundi coach Jean Pierre was gracious in defeat.

"I would like to congratulate Zambia, we take this loss as a lesson to continue building our team," he said.

Zambia will now be aiming to secure one of the four slots reserved for Africa at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland. Success in the campaign would mark the Copper Princesses’ maiden appearance at the prestigious tournament.

Police break up ring trafficking Kenyans to fight for Russia in Ukraine

More than 20 people have been rescued in Kenya from a suspected human trafficking ring that lured them with job offers in Russia but intended to send them to fight in Ukraine, police said.

It follows an intelligence-led raid on a residential apartment on the outskirts of the capital, Nairobi, where officers seized recruitment materials, travel documents, and job offer letters.

One suspect, accused of coordinating the victims' travel to Russia in September and October, has been arrested.

He was taken to court, which allowed him to be detained for 10 days while the police complete their investigations.

There have been growing concerns over the rising number of Kenyans being trafficked abroad under false job promises.

A young Kenyan athlete was recently captured in Ukraine, saying he was tricked into joining the Russian army.

YOU CAN POLITICK ALL YOU WANT, BUT ZAMBIANS UNDERSTAND WHY WE HAVE LOADSHEDDING - VEEP

VICE-President Mutale Nalumango says while politicians may try to politicise the energy crisis, citizens understand that the long hours of load shedding are due to the severe drought the country has faced.

Vice-President Nalumango notes that while other countries prepared for climate change by diversifying their energy sources, Zambia lagged behind, stating that the underinvestment in renewable energy sources like solar is a lack of foresight on the part of previous administrations.

Speaking when she debated President Hakainde Hichilema’s speech that was made during the opening of the 5th session of the 13th National Assembly, Thursday, Vice-President Nalumango said the country would have been in a blackout by now had it not been for the investments made by the UPND...

By Moombe Hamoboola

Government is working towards making game meat widely available to Zambians as part of efforts to combat illegal poaching and promote legal, sustainable wildlife utilisation..

Tourism Minister Rodney Sikumba revealed that the Ministry of Tourism is developing a framework to make game meat accessible in supermarkets and restaurants.

Speaking during the World Tourism Day commemoration, Mr. Sikumba said the initiative in collaboration with private game ranches is expected to be implemented by Christmas.

Meanwhile, Sports Minister Elvis Nkandu emphasized the importance of sustaining the momentum in the tourism sector, following the recording of 2.2 million international visitors to Zambia this year.

Mr. Nkandu said as the country targets to hit over 3 million international visitors next year, it is important that measures are put in place to sustain those numbers.

Also speaking at the event, Southern Province Minister Credo Nanjuwa called for a multi-sectoral approach to address persistent human-wildlife conflicts, particularly affecting communities in Livingstone and surrounding areas.

He has also called on players in the tourism sector to embrace clean and renewable energy such as solar and also eco-friendly infrastructure to reduce carbon footprint.
